Need to know Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Affectionate and intelligent, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were originally bred as companions and this is truly evident in the gentle mannered breed that we know and love today. This breed makes a very loyal addition to any warm and loving home.
TEMPERAMENT: Friendly, sweet-natured and playful; Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are widely considered as the ultimate companion dog and is why they were bred in the first place! As a breed they are generally easy-going and easy to train as puppies.
APPEARANCE: Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are small well-proportioned dogs with a rounded head and full muzzle. Bulbous dark eyes, a black nose and high set feathered ears are also key features of this dog.
AVERAGE HEIGHT: 30-33cm (12-13 inches).
AVERAGE WEIGHT: 5-8kg (10-18lbs).
OUR TOP TIP: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is permanently puppy-like and friendly which makes him loved by everyone. However, unfortunately their enthusiasm coupled with their fearlessness makes them a bit of a worry near road traffic and the like! They should be kept on a lead near cars and anywhere else where exploration is potentially dangerous.
The precise origins of this hugely popular Toy Breed are unknown but one popular theory is that he first originated several centuries ago as a result of interbreeding between the King Charles Spaniel and the Pug.
EARLY REFERENCES: During the early part of the 18th century, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, kept red and white King Charles type spaniels for hunting. Named for King Charles II, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as we know it today is the result of American breeders in the late 1920s.
RECOGNITION: Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were first recognised by The Kennel Club in 1944.
BREED SUBTYPES: An average shedder, regular brushing and grooming will ensure a healthy coat that comes in either black & tan, blenheim, ruby or tricolour.
Due to over breeding of this popular dog it is prone to several hereditary conditions, so We advise that you always choose a responsible breeder who is happy to discuss any relevant health issues with you.
INHERITED CONDITIONS: Cavaliers can often suffer from, most notably mitral valve disease which is a disorder of the heart.
LIFESPAN: 9-14 years.
EXERCISE RECOMMENDATIONS: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should be given up to one hour of exercise per day.
