The Staffordshire Bull Terrier makes the perfect pet for a busy, active family but he must know who is boss and his strength should always be respected.
TEMPERAMENT: Totally fearless but a big softie at heart. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has an unfair reputation as something of a menace. In fact this breed is highly affectionate and loving towards their owner, and is very obedient.
APPEARANCE: Smooth-coated, short haired, stocky and well-balanced in size. This extremely muscular dog is active and agile. The head is broad and deep with a short foreface, black nose and dark, round eyes.
AVERAGE HEIGHT: 36-41cm (14-16 inches).
AVERAGE WEIGHT: 11-17kg (24-37lbs).
OUR TOP TIP: Staffordshire Bull Terriers have very playful jaws, particularly as puppies, so strong, chewable toys are a must to distract them from your sofas and tables!
It is widely accepted that Staffordshire Bull Terriers were the result of crossing a Bulldog with a terrier type to create a dog that was cruelly used for dog fighting and bull baiting in the 19th century.
EARLY REFERENCES: Despite Staffordshire Bull Terriers historical connections with fighting – they have become a great show favourite and are one of the most popular of all terriers. As their name suggests, this breed originates from Staffordshire, England. The breed’s popularity waned as interest in the bull-baiting sport waned, however it picked up again in the 20th century particularly in the US.
RECOGNITION: A relatively new breed – despite their popularity - the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was recognised by The Kennel Club in 1935.
BREED SUBTYPES: The Staffie can be found in a wide variety of colours, including; Black, Blue, Brindle, Fawn, Liver, Red and White
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are as sturdy as they look and generally this is a breed with very good health by comparison to others.
INHERITED CONDITIONS: Currently there are several screening tests available for Staffordshire Bull Terriers, with its core potential hereditary condition being cataracts and other eye complaints.
LIFESPAN: 10 years or more.
EXERCISE RECOMMENDATIONS: Exercise your Staffie for up to an hour a day to ensure optimum health and best behaviour.
