Dogs of War

6/6

This photograph shows Airedale Terriers who were taught to use gas masks as part of their military service. Airedale Terriers were widely used during the First World War and to a lesser extent also the Second World War. They were given many tasks, including sentry duty, searching for wounded soldiers, running telephone cables, and carrying written messages in a specially adapted collar. It has been reported that over 3000 Airedales lost their lives in the trenches.
