Labrador saves owner from heart attack

Beauty therapist Joanna Mellor suffered a cardiac arrest in her sleep on 2nd January but was saved thanks to her pet Labrador Leo’s barks for help.

Five year old Leo’s howls woke and alerted Joanna’s boyfriend Andrew Rayment that she had stopped breathing. Andrew was then able to dial 999 and perform CPR on Joanna until the paramedics arrived and took her to hospital.

Medics said that Joanna’s heart had stopped for 30 minutes before Andrew resuscitated her.

Incredibly, Joanna has made a full recovery since that fateful night and has been diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome – a condition that causes the heart to beat abnormally fast.

“I owe my life to my dog and my boyfriend. If Leo hadn’t woken Andrew up I might not be here today,” said Joanna.

“Andrew said he woke up with Leo barking and jumping up at my side of the bed and going mad. He says he could tell something was wrong with me and dialled 999 and the operator talked him through CPR.”

“At first the doctors said I might be at risk of brain damage and I couldn’t feel my legs and one of my hands was all limp but I’ve now made a full recovery.”
