Domestic cat Merlin has worked his magic and secured the Guinness World Record for the highest decibel-rated cat purr.
Peaking at an impressive 67.8dB – the feline’s purr is as loud as the sound of a shower or two people having a conversation. He has snatched the title from former loudest cat purr-er Smokey who held the record since 2011 with a 67.68dB purr.
Hailing from Torquay in Devon, Merlin’s thunderous purr began to emerge after he was rescued from an animal centre by Tracy Westwood as a kitten – and even then his range was impressive compared to a full grown cat.
“Occasionally when he’s really loud I have to repeat myself,” said Tracy.
“When you’re watching films you have to turn the telly up or put him out of the room. I can hear him when I’m drying my hair.”
Merlin will be making an appearance on Channel 5’s Cats Make You Laugh Out Loud 2 on Wednesday 13th May for his record-breaking achievement.
