Election fever has officially gripped the UK and with only a week until we cast our votes for this year’s general election – we take a look at some of the most memorable political pets from the last century...

In 2013, Chancellor George Osborne tweeted about the arrival of a new member to Downing Street – Lola the Bichon Frisé. The fluffy white pooch, named by his children, is believed to be the first dog to live at Downing Street since the 1960's when Prime Minister Harold Wilson had his yellow Labrador Paddy. Previously it had been the cats who dominated the headlines, with Larry (David Cameron's cat) and Freya (George Osborne's cat) taking centre stage – however shortly after Lola’s arrival, the latter was removed from Downing Street over her tendency to stray.
