It should be renamed to &#8216;park cough&#8217;; although the virus is known to spread quickly in kennel facilities, it is also very easily spread amongst dogs in parks or those who are walked in groups.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14218\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-1.jpg\" alt=\"how to avoid your dog getting kennel cough 1\" width=\"500\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-1-195x142.jpg 195w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-1-215x156.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kennel cough is spread by airborne droplets released when the dog coughs or sneezes. It can also be spread by sharing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/pets\/d-bowls-dining\/dogs\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food bowls<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/pets\/dogs\/d-toys\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">toys<\/a> with infected dogs. The symptoms of kennel cough include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dry, hacking cough which can sound like &#8216;something stuck in the throat&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Lethargy<\/li>\n<li>Retching<\/li>\n<li>Sneezing<\/li>\n<li>Snorting<\/li>\n<li>Discharge from the nose<\/li>\n<li>Fever (not all dogs have a fever with kennel cough)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14219\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-2.jpg\" alt=\"how to avoid your dog getting kennel cough 2\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-2-214x142.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-2-215x142.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is no treatment for kennel cough as it is caused by a virus. However, secondary bacterial infections may be treated with antibiotics. You can make your dog feel more comfortable if he catches kennel cough by giving him a teaspoon of honey twice a day; honey is a natural antimicrobial and also soothes sore throats. Keep exercise to a minimum while your dog recovers; running or even walking can exacerbate symptoms. Keep your dog away from other dogs where possible to help prevent the spread of infection, and disinfect food bowls and toys after use. Do not give your dog human cough medicines as they often contain paracetamol or ibuprofen which extremely toxic to dogs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14220\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-3.jpg\" alt=\"how to avoid your dog getting kennel cough 3\" width=\"500\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-3.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-3-207x142.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-3-215x147.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vaccination against kennel cough prevents infection against most strains of the virus, although is it not foolproof; even vaccinated dogs can contract mutated strains. The vaccination is administered as a liquid squired up the nose. It is rapidly absorbed and provides protection from seven days after vaccination, and normally lasts one year. Vaccination is a requirement for all kennels and doggy daycare centres, and may be a requirement for some dog walkers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14221\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-4.jpg\" alt=\"how to avoid your dog getting kennel cough 4\" width=\"500\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-4.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-4-210x142.jpg 210w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/how-to-avoid-your-dog-getting-kennel-cough-4-215x145.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you are concerned that your dog has kennel cough, especially if he is very flat or lethargic, seek veterinary advice.
