Top dog trainer, Charlie Clarricoates reveals how to spot if your dog is suffering from separation anxiety\u00a0and how to help them.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/b>Separation anxiety\u00a0is one of the most common behaviour problems reported by dog owners, with 15% of UK dogs reportedly suffering from the condition, and an even greater number showing symptoms, often unrecognised by the owner. Dogs who whine, bark, or destroy the home when their owner is away are exhibiting signs of separation anxiety, while other signs are harder to spot. Dogs who constantly follow their owner around, who always like to keep part of their body touching their owner, or who become quickly agitated when they are left alone, are all giving subtle clues that they are suffering from anxiety. To find out if your dog is suffering with the condition, keep an eye out for these signs and try to record a tape of your dog while you are out of the house \u2013 if the moment you leave, your dog starts barking and ruining the furniture, you can assume that he\u2019s not happy about you being away!<\/p>\n

So, how do you remedy separation anxiety? Charlie Clarricoates, founder of Charlie\u2019s Dog Training Centre, outlines how to ensure your dog will remain calm and happy when alone:<\/p>\n

1. Anxiety is often a by-product of boredom and extra energy. Implement some daily challenges, such as placing dry food<\/a> across your lawn for your dogs to hunt for.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

2. Create some space between you and your dog. When dealing with an anxious dog, owners should gently teach their pooch how to be apart. Try giving dogs a \u2018time out\u2019 in a gated area, leaving them for 15 minutes with a toy<\/a> while you go and do something else.<\/p>\n

3. Don\u2019t give your dog excessive, constant attention. If a dog believes he can receive attention whenever he wants, he will get frustrated when he doesn\u2019t receive any! Play the \u2018attention game\u2019 \u2013 playing with your dog for a few minutes then gently say \u2018enough\u2019. You then ignore your furry friend until he stops trying to engage you.<\/p>\n

4. Don\u2019t let your pooch sleep in the bedroom. Giving your dog space will reduce dependency and therefore anxiety.<\/p>\n

5. As you are getting ready to leave the house, put the dog in a separate space and give them a chew toy<\/a> or some treats<\/a>. Don\u2019t let your dog see or hear you getting ready. You may want to play the radio to mask sounds like picking up car keys and closing the front door.<\/p>\n

6.When you return, remain calm and collected. If your canine companion has misbehaved, don\u2019t punish them \u2013 your dog won\u2019t understand that they\u2019re being punished for something that happened hours ago.
