{"id":17345,"date":"2014-03-03T17:00:54","date_gmt":"2014-03-03T16:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/?p=17345"},"modified":"2025-03-03T13:10:35","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T12:10:35","slug":"palm-oil-killing-uk-dogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/palm-oil-killing-uk-dogs\/","title":{"rendered":"Toxic palm oil is killing dogs on UK beaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>At least three dogs have died and several others have been poisoned and left in agony after ingesting\u00a0solidified palm oil that is thought to have been washed ashore on the UK coast due to recent storms.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maritime, environment and animal welfare organisations are now warning UK dog owners to avoid the\u00a0toxic substance that is hard, white and chalky, and often emits a diesel-like smell.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/palm-oil.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17347 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/palm-oil.jpg\" alt=\"palm oil\" width=\"634\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first reported casualty was three-year old Miniature Schnauzer Zanzi who died after swallowing a\u00a0marble-sized lump of the oil on Marazion beach in south Cornwall.\u00a0Zanzi\u2019s owner Lucy Garrett Peel told the Daily Mail, \u201cWe immediately took her to the vet and she had an\u00a0emergency operation. She died that night. Whatever it was got stuck in her stomach. It was tested and\u00a0found to be extremely rancid palm oil, containing some very nasty bacteria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/palm-oil-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17349 aligncenter\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/palm-oil-2.jpg\" alt=\"palm oil 2\" width=\"634\" height=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the latest victims was 23-month old Lurcher-Staffordshire Terrier cross Dave, who died after\u00a0playing with the substance on Mothecombe beach in Devon. His owner Fiona Cook said he became\u00a0violently sick hours later, and his kidneys and liver were so badly damaged that vets were unable to\u00a0save him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/palm-oil-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17350 aligncenter\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/palm-oil-3.jpg\" alt=\"palm oil 3\" width=\"634\" height=\"620\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Palm oil is usually found in food, soaps, shampoos and biofuels, and is harmless to humans. However,\u00a0in its solid form it can be fatal to dogs, inducing agonising stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhoea.Veterinary treatment should be seeked immediately if a dog has eaten the
