At the grand old age of 24, the tortoiseshell cat had lived through five British Prime Ministers, being born the year that Nelson Mandela was released from prison.<\/p>\n<p>Recognised by the Guinness World Records on May 19<sup>th<\/sup>, Poppy became ill with a water infection and developed problems with her hind legs. Her owner Jacqui West said, \u2018We knew she was old but it\u2019s still very upsetting. She had a bad week last week. She was on antibiotics on the Wednesday because of a water infection and her back legs just seemed to let her down. She wasn\u2019t herself at all. She passed away on Friday at 3.30pm. I had spent the whole day with her as she was particularly poorly.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s great she managed to get the world record beforehand, it\u2019s almost like she was purposely hanging in there because the process took months.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/popp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18999 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/popp.jpg\" alt=\"popp\" width=\"638\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although 24 is a ripe old age to reach, Poppy didn\u2019t manage to beat the oldest cat in history who was an astonishing 38 years old and three days. The feline called Creme Puff lived in Austin, Texas and was the oldest cat ever recorded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Poppy, the world\u2019s oldest cat, has died weeks after
