It exists to help the pets of people in need and has been doing so for almost 100 years. To provide this vital service the charity relies solely on public support as it receives no government funding.<\/p>\n<p>One way to raise the funds needed to ensure this crucial service can continue, the charity offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdsa.org.uk\/shop\/pet-saving-gifts\" target=\"_blank\">pet saving gifts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pet saving gifts<\/strong> are unlike ordinary presents. Each pet saving gift purchased \u2013 from <strong>bandages for just \u00a35<\/strong>, to a day\u2019s worth of e<strong>quipment for \u00a390<\/strong> \u2013 it will help a PDSA vet help a sick or injured pet in need. Such as, Holly, a miracle dog that cheated death thanks to PDSA vets who battled against the odds to save her.<\/p>\n<p>Holly, the Border Collie, was given just a 10 per cent chance of survival when vets diagnosed her with one of the worst cases of septic peritonitis they have ever seen. Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum \u2013 the thin membrane that lines the abdominal cavity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28000 aligncenter\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Border-Collie-Holly-who-survived-against-the-odds-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"Border Collie Holly PDSA\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Border-Collie-Holly-who-survived-against-the-odds-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Border-Collie-Holly-who-survived-against-the-odds-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Border-Collie-Holly-who-survived-against-the-odds-930x620.jpg 930w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Border-Collie-Holly-who-survived-against-the-odds.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Holly\u2019s case it had developed into infected fluid filling her whole abdominal cavity, covering her vital organs.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-month-old dog underwent three lifesaving operations and spent a week in intensive care at the vet charity\u2019s pet hospital in Braunstone, Leicester.<\/p>\n<p>Her owners, Alan and Jude Gray, from Belgrave, said they were preparing themselves for the worst after PDSA vets gave them a dire prognosis.<\/p>\n<p>Alan said: \u201cHolly had been off her food and just didn\u2019t seem herself. Initially we thought she might have worms or something but then her stomach became swollen and we began worrying it could be more serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took her to PDSA who examined her and ran some tests which confirmed that she had a very serious infection. They warned us that her chances weren\u2019t good and we had to prepare ourselves for the worst. We were absolutely devastated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28001 aligncenter\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/PDSA-Vet-Nurse-Nikola-Capell-Turner-with-Holly-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"PDSA Vet Nurse Nikola Capell-Turner with Border Collie Holly\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/PDSA-Vet-Nurse-Nikola-Capell-Turner-with-Holly-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/PDSA-Vet-Nurse-Nikola-Capell-Turner-with-Holly-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/PDSA-Vet-Nurse-Nikola-Capell-Turner-with-Holly-930x620.jpg 930w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/PDSA-Vet-Nurse-Nikola-Capell-Turner-with-Holly.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But following difficult operations which involved draining infected fluid from Holly\u2019s abdomen, and treatment with intravenous antibiotics, she began to rally and showed major improvement over the next few days.<\/p>\n<p>PDSA Senior Vet, Elly Hopkins, said: \u201cHolly\u2019s case was one of the worst cases of peritonitis we\u2019ve ever seen at Leicester Pet Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiraculously, and against the odds, Holly has survived. But sadly many pets don\u2019t survive this condition. Holly was lucky that she\u2019s young and healthy, and it\u2019s great that she\u2019s gone on to make a full recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alan said the family were hugely grateful to PDSA for the treatment Holly received:\u00a0\u201cI honestly don\u2019t know what we would have done without PDSA, they have been amazing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer treatment would have cost over \u00a31,000, which we would never have been able to afford. We can\u2019t thank them enough for saving Holly, it really is a miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alan and Jude\u2019s son Tim, was so moved by what happened he launched a fundraising challenge to give up alcohol to raise money for PDSA.\u00a0He has already raised over \u00a3200 and is being joined in the challenge by Judy and his sister Victoria.
