However, the garden poses risks that we may not have even considered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Marvin J.Firth gives us his top tips on what to look out for in your garden and how to protect them from harm\u2019s way! We also know how disappointing it is if our pets decide to taste them, but it\u2019s important to know what specific plants could potentially be hazardous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The most toxic plants for dogs include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aconitum<\/li>\n<li>Amaryllis\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Asparagus fern<\/li>\n<li>Azalea\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Bluebells\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Crocus<\/li>\n<li>Cyclamen<\/li>\n<li>Daffodils<\/li>\n<li>Day lilies<\/li>\n<li>Delephiniums<\/li>\n<li>Dog&#8217;s Mercury (Mercuriallis perennis)<\/li>\n<li>Foxgloves<\/li>\n<li>Hemlock\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Hydrangea<\/li>\n<li>Ivy<\/li>\n<li>Laburnum<\/li>\n<li>Lily of the valley\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Lupins\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Morning glory\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Nightshade<\/li>\n<li>Oleander<\/li>\n<li>Rhododendron\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Rhubarb leaves\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Sweet pea\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Tulips<\/li>\n<li>Umbrella plant<\/li>\n<li>Wisteria<\/li>\n<li>Yew\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bulbs of common plants such as Daffoldils and Tulpis can be particulalry threatening if ingested. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In very extreme cases, these can be fatal. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common plants such as Foxglove and Oleander contain compounds which affect heart and muscle function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-35786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"247\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although, do not fear if you are a dog and plant lover &#8211; these are just things to look out for and doesn\u2019t mean your pup can\u2019t roam freely in the garden! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider these steps to reduce any health risks: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plant any of these plants in pots away from the ground- this can also add a wonderful decorative touch to your garden!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the bulbs of daffodils and tulips are harmful to your adventurous dog, try planting them in window boxes. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are informative resources online which can let you know which plants are safe for your dog, for example, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogstrust.org.uk\/help-advice\/factsheets-downloads\/factsheetpoisonoussubstances09.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.dogstrust.org.uk\/help-advice\/factsheets-downloads\/factsheetpoisonoussubstances09.pdf<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you ever have any doubts, contact your vet and they will advise the best course of action to take, and often suggest a clinical examination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try and isolate the plant which your pup may have taken a bite of and take it to the vet with you! This will make it quicker and easier to identify the problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any chemicals used such as pesticides, paints and preservatives should be kept out of contact with your four-legged friend.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not give your dog anything such as salt, aspirin or milk as this can actually cause adverse effects, sometimes worse than the plant itself! <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h4>Did you know?
