Graeme shared some invaluable insights into how spending time with our dogs can improve our wellbeing, keep us happy and bring us some much-needed positivity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Dogs provide companionship<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graeme is quick to emphasise the importance of dogs companionship with humans: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs companion animals by nature, our dogs simply love to be around us. It\u2019s what makes them man\u2019s best friend!<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, a lot of us will find ourselves on our own right now, and even if we\u2019re not physically alone, we may tend to feel lonely.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, more than ever, companionship is crucial to our wellbeing, and even if we\u2019re not lucky enough to have that in human form, a bit of doggie love will still do us the world of good!\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Graeme.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cDogs are the friends we can always rely on to cheer us up and be there for us&#8230;\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, in a time where we all need love and company, our dogs are our <em>knights in shining fur<\/em>\u00a0and the pawfect companions for us.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Dogs reduce stress and anxiety<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s safe to say a lot of us will be feeling additional stress and anxiety in the current climate. Luckily for us dog owners, our pooches can actually help to reduce these feelings of stress and anxiety. Not only that, but they can often significantly improve our mood and happiness! Graeme explains:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is lots of evidence to suggest dogs reduce stress and anxiety. In fact, owning and stroking a pet has actually been shown to release endorphins &#8211; the feel good hormone. This explains why we often feel at our most relaxed when we\u2019re just sitting with our dog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>Dogs restore normality<\/b><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs are great levellers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, says Graeme. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They bring a bit of normality, which is something we all need right now<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same way our dogs can pick up on our mood, we can also tune in to theirs. Of course most of the time, our dogs are pretty relaxed and chilled out, and when we tap into that, everything doesn\u2019t seem so bad\u2026 if your dog\u2019s relaxed, it helps us to be too, and we start to think well, if my dog\u2019s okay, I\u2019m okay too<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dogfather went on to suggest that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cin a way, dogs are role models for us and we can learn a lot from them, just like they can learn from us. In a time where it\u2019s easy to let yourself get worried and worked up, it\u2019s important to try to be as mindful as possible, and just focus on the now. Even by doing something as simple as focussing on your dog, it somehow makes things a little more &#8216;normal&#8217;.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>Fresh air &amp; exercise<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite restrictions on our outside movement, we are still able to go out and walk our dogs &#8211; just as long as we\u2019re being responsible and distancing ourselves two meters from others. Graeme insists <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re safe to get out and keep distance, get out! A bit of fresh air and exercise is good for our mental health and soul!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government advise to exercise once a day, means it\u2019s important to make it count. So, as Graeme suggests, if you can, take your pooch for a stroll or jog and soak up some much-needed vitamin D. Find comfort in the sunshine and the birds. You\u2019ll feel a lot better afterwards!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sociability<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously due to social distancing restrictions, we\u2019re unable to meet up with friends and family or other dog-owners. Well, it\u2019s not all doom and gloom because, as Graeme correctly points out; <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven though we can\u2019t go out with our dogs and be sociable like we normally would, it doesn\u2019t necessarily mean we can\u2019t still be sociable. There\u2019s different types of sociable &#8211; with social media we can now be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/petspyjamaspetpals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sociable online<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He went on to suggest that \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there\u2019s still lots of\u00a0 ways to have a bit lighthearted fun, whether it\u2019s by sharing adorable pictures of our pets, FaceTiming with them to our friends and family, or taking part in one of the hilarious challenges that are going round at the moment! Our dogs will always be a fantastic source of fun and laughter.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>Better home-working life<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though many of us are no longer working in an office, there\u2019s plenty of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/content\/doi\/10.1108\/17538351211215366\/full\/html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to suggest that before all this happened, dogs joining you in the workplace can significantly reduce stress.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graeme highlights that:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cT<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he same applies now, we still have the same if not more stresses when working from home. People tend to push themselves harder at home, it\u2019s not as easy as it seems! So dogs can reduce that stress.
