With spring just around the corner, it\u2019s time to think about getting your best furry friend ready for the warmer months. Cocker Spaniel expert and owner of Cocker Spaniel Worldwide<\/a>, Kinga Geszler, tells us about the steps she takes every year to help prepare her beloved Cocker Spaniel Szam\u00f3ca (which means Strawberry) for Spring.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Brush more regularly!<\/b><\/h4>\n


<\/span>We all know as the weather gets warmer and the days longer, your dog will more than likely begin to shed more. With that in mind, It\u2019s time to brush your dog more frequently! In my household it\u2019s the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

As Szam\u00f3ca starts to shed her winter coat and change her fur from a thick to a soft, silkier one, I start brushing her more regularly – it helps to keep the shedding under control. Luckily, she loves to be brushed, but if your dog isn\u2019t a fan of the brush, try rewarding them with some healthy snacks whilst you give them a nice groom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cocker Spaniels typically require a fair amount of brushing to prevent their fur from tangling, so it’s a good idea to do this regularly to keep your pooch’s coat in tip-top condition. We also got into the habit of brushing Szam\u00f3ca outside so she leaves all the dead hair outside the house.\u00a0

<\/span>
<\/span>Wash your dog\u2019s coat\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n


<\/span>After the brushing, I also wash her coat, clean her ears, and trim her nails. It’s important to keep your dog’s ears dry when you bath them to prevent further ear problems. I use cotton pads to keep it waterproof as much as it is possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After the bath, we use her ear cleaner liquid and dry it with cotton pads. If I trim the fur inside of her ears, I’ll use cotton pads again to prevent the cut fur from falling into her ear canal, where it can build up into a greasy bulk and potentially cause ear problems. <\/span>

<\/span>
<\/span>Keep your house clean!<\/b><\/h4>\n


<\/b>I also find it important to wash my dog\u2019s bedding, too. A good wash eliminates all the fur, dirt, and bacteria that have accumulated in your dog\u2019s bed. In the Springtime, I also tend to wash all my carpet, floors, and draperies to ensure the house is free of any fleas or parasites. Anyhow, bedding should be washed every three to four months to avoid further problems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Make all the necessary checks<\/b>

<\/b><\/h4>\n

Finally, I\u2019ll check the expiration date on the flea protection we use on Szam\u00f3ca. In her case, it\u2019s a very good quality tick\/flea collar. I always make sure I check her heartworm medicine, too, as well as any other extras like her lead and tags. It\u2019s also a good idea to check if your dog\u2019s information is all up to date too, whether it be insurance details, vet records, passport etc.<\/span><\/p>\n
