Exertional occurs during exercise and is much more common on hot sunny days when dogs haven\u2019t had a chance to acclimatise to the sudden rise in heat. Dogs can take up to 60 days to acclimatise to significant changes in temperature, which isn\u2019t ideal in the UK as the weather tends to change from week to week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second type of heat stroke is when a dog is exposed to a notable rise in temperature but doesn\u2019t have access to the ventilation, or drinking water, to keep themselves cool. This typically occurs in a parked car, a garden with no shade, or a very hot room.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Signs of Heat Stroke in Dogs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the early stages\u00a0of heat stroke, your dog is likely to appear restless and distressed. They may also\u00a0pant heavily and\u00a0drool. As their condition worsens they will begin to lose coordination and eventually collapse.\u00a0 It\u2019s worth noting that normal rectal temperature for dogs is around 38.6\u00b0C (101.5\u00b0F) to 38.9\u00b0C (102\u00b0F) and anything above this is abnormal.\u00a0Other signs of\u00a0heat stroke include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racing heart<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overheating (skin hot to touch)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glassy eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsteady on feet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gums turning a bluish-purple or bright red colour<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unconsciousness or collapse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you spot any of these signs please contact your vet straight away. They may advise you to slowly cool your dog\u2019s head and body using tepid spray before offering small amounts of water to drink. You should never immerse your dog in an ice bath or freezing cold water as cooling them too quickly can do more harm than good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your dog needs a physical examination, they will undergo a series of tests to determine the treatment required. If their condition is severe they will require urgent, intensive care. Your dog may be placed on a drip and given supplemental oxygen depending on whether they\u2019re suffering breathing difficulties. Once their temperature begins to fall and their breathing is under control further diagnostic tests will be carried out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Preventing Heat Stroke &#8211; How to Keep Your Dog Cool\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The simplest way to ensure your dog doesn\u2019t succumb to heat stroke is preventing it from happening in the first place. Here are some tips on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/15-tips-for-keeping-your-canine-cool\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to keep your dog cool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the summer, walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening. Never\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vets-now.com\/summer\/heat-stroke-dogs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise your dog\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the middle of a hot day and restrict exercise on hot days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t overdo exercise during warm spells, regardless of the time of day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always provide a cool, shades area for your dog to relax in<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure your dog has access to plenty of fresh drinking water and always take water on a walk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spray your dog with cool water<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circulate cool air on hot summer days. Open windows, turn on a box fan or keep the air conditioning on at a reasonable temperature. Your dog will appreciate having a cool place to relax indoors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep dogs out of conservatories, greenhouses and stuffy rooms. These areas can get dangerously hot even when it might only feel mild outside. Bear in mind that there are no cooling breezes inside these sun traps and they magnify the heat\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid long car journeys. If you decide to take your dog in the car, make sure the air conditioning is on or the windows are open.
