{"id":36486,"date":"2021-10-26T12:31:26","date_gmt":"2021-10-26T11:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/?p=36486"},"modified":"2022-06-29T16:42:48","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T15:42:48","slug":"me-my-pet-mat-ward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/me-my-pet-mat-ward\/","title":{"rendered":"Me &#038; My Pet: Mat Ward"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We spoke to dog behaviourist Mat Ward as he tells us about his lovely doggys Pepper and Suki, some of his dog training tales, and his new book &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/uk\/what-dogs-want-9781526639950\/\"><em><strong>What Dogs Want<\/strong><\/em><\/a>&#8216;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Mat Ward is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.petbehavioursorted.com\/\">dog behaviourist<\/a>\u00a0who champions reward-based training and has helped thousands of pets and owners improve their wellbeing over the past two decades. His skills were tested to the limit when he took on the challenge of teaching a rescue dog to fly a plane for the TV show Dogs Might Fly. Mat lives in New Zealand with his wife, children, two cats and two dogs.<\/b><\/p>\n<h4><strong><br \/>Tell us about your doggys!\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;So I have two girls, Pepper and Suki. Pepper is a curly coat Retriever-Labrador cross. She\u2019s 11, although she thinks she\u2019s about 11 months! She\u2019s a bit of a lunatic &#8211; loves to chase things&#8230; the ball is her passion! Suki is her daughter, she\u2019s seven\u2026 she\u2019s three-quarters lab, and a quarter curly coat. She actually had a cleft palate when she was born so she couldn\u2019t suckle properly to get the milk&#8230; so we hand fed her and she stayed with us.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><br \/><strong>Describe Pepper and Suki in three words&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><br \/><em>&#8220;Goofy, cuddly and foodie! They love their food, but I guess that&#8217;s what you&#8217;d expect with a bit of a labrador in them.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><br \/><strong>I hear you&#8217;re living in New Zealand, wow! Do Pepper and Suki have a favourite place to visit in NZ?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><em>&#8220;I\u2019d probably say their favourite thing is when they\u2019re in a new place &#8211; a novel area where they haven\u2019t been before. Their scenting goes into overdrive\u2026they just love to explore! I\u2019d love to get inside their head sometimes and understand all the factory info, smells etc that they\u2019re getting and what they\u2019re learning\u2026 because they seem pretty fascinated by it all!\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as their regular haunts go, there\u2019s a swimming hole and a stream near here, and they love to get in there. Pepper will retrieve a ball for hours, whereas Suki\u2019s more of a paddle about and do few circles, and then get out and sniff around the banks and stones etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were actually in Scotland for many a year but now we\u2019re in New Zealand, and Suki\u2019s actually swimming a bit more because the water\u2019s a little warmer over here!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><br \/><strong>If you were to take your dogs on a dog-friendly holiday here in the UK, where would you go?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d have to say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/s\/travel\/dog-friendly-east-lothian\">East Lothian<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/s\/travel\/dog-friendly-scotland\">Scotland<\/a>, East of Edinburgh. We lived there for 14 years, and I couldn\u2019t recommend a more dog-friendly place\u2026with woodlands, amazing beaches, often blue skies &#8211; it\u2019s a lot dryer out there, and lots to see! So that would be the best dog spot for me.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Being a dog behaviourist must be such a rewarding job &#8211; do you have any stories you&#8217;d like to share?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probably one of the most interesting and challenging training cases I\u2019ve been involved in was for the Sky program \u2018Dogs Might Fly\u2019, where I trained a dog to fly a plane. Not to take off or land or operate the radio or all those other critical things, but to keep a steady altitude, turn left or right&#8230;on cue\u2026with the ultimate aim of doing a figure of eight. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We came up with a system where if the lights and sounds came on on the left, they had to steer a little bit left, and if lights came on on the right, they had to go a little bit to the right&#8230;and a white light meant to fly straight ahead. It was really quite a project, but a rewarding one!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-36497\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mat-Ward-Dogs-Might-Fly.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mat-Ward-Dogs-Might-Fly.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mat-Ward-Dogs-Might-Fly-690x460.jpeg 690w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mat-Ward-Dogs-Might-Fly-930x620.jpeg 930w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mat-Ward-Dogs-Might-Fly-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><br \/><br \/><\/h4>\n<h4><br \/><strong>What would you say is the most unusual behavioural problem you&#8217;ve had to deal with?\u00a0<\/strong><br \/><br \/><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One that springs to mind is a dog who started to walk backwards in the house. He\u2019d be walking along fine then he would turn around and walk backwards for a number of metres, and then turn around and walk normally. Otherwise, he was a young, healthy, happy dog. He got initially tested for neurological function and had a lot of veterenary specialist advice, and then was referred on to me to provide a behavioural perspective to try and figure out what might be going on.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, we actually figured out that he had a cone of shame after an operation he\u2019d had\u2026 the problem was, when he went through narrow areas the cone would hit say the edge of the sofa\u2026and it was quite nerve-racking for him. And so he learnt with his cone that if he backed through areas that were narrower than a about a metre or so that he wouldn\u2019t get that bang.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The cone came off but he actually continued that behaviour, and because the cone wasn\u2019t on for long the owner didn\u2019t make that link&#8230;but we managed to make that link and to essentially teach him that he was safe walking through those areas and everything was fine. But yeah, on the face of it, an unusual one!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><br \/><strong>Tell us about your book&#8230;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d like to think it\u2019s a really accessible, fun and informative book. It\u2019s filled with illustrations and lots of little tippets of information&#8230;but essentially, after working with dogs for 25 years, everything that I\u2019ve learnt and I think is critical and important to know as a dog owner, I&#8217;ve put in there&#8230;in a way which is fun, enjoyable, and accessible.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s not too overwhelming with lots of text&#8230; you can pick it up, read a page, or read 10 pages. The illustrator <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rupert Fawcett did an amazing job, and to see all those ideas which I know are important, there on the page, in a way that hopefully will be enjoyable for everyone to read\u2026it\u2019s great.<br \/><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-36493\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mat-Ward-Me-And-My-Pet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"560\" \/><\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4><br \/><strong>What made you want to turn your dog behaviourost epxertise into a book?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s so much information about dog training out there, whether it be on the internet, someone you bump into out on a dog walk, your uncle Bob, friends and family or whoever, everyone\u2019s got an opinion on dog behaviour. Some of it\u2019s great&#8230;some of it\u2019s terrible&#8230; and there\u2019s a lot in between! So it\u2019s hard for a lot of people to sort the wheat from the chaff as far as that information goes. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so I wanted to write a book that essentially gave dog owners a toolkit for everything they needed to know, without it being too complex &#8211; because it really doesn\u2019t need to be! And I think i\u2019ve achieved that. I\u2019m really excited about it, and I think it\u2019s suitable for everyone, whether you\u2019ve never owned a dog before to more experienced dog owners, I think everyone will get something from it.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><br \/><strong>What was your favourite chapter to write about?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><br \/><em>I quite like a section where we answer those dog mystery questions &#8211; like &#8220;why do dogs dig?&#8221; or eat grass, or circle before they sleep, or scrape the ground before they go to the toilet&#8230;or lick me, or eat poo! There&#8217;s a section where we answer all those questions, so that was a fun one.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><br \/><strong>Is there a particular extract of the book you feel dog owners find interesting or surprising?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><br \/><em>There&#8217;s a section called &#8216;The Tail Tells a Tale&#8217; and it&#8217;s about the dogs tail and what it means. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of people think a wagging tail means a happy dog, but it doesn\u2019t necessarily! Unless it\u2019s a propeller, hellicopter type wag where the bum does a circle; but just a wagging tail doesn\u2019t mean a happy dog and I break that down a little more. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, how high the tail is held, where it\u2019s held, speed of wag&#8230; all these things tell us something about how our dogs might be thinking and feeling.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-36443\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screenshot-2021-10-18-at-13.10.22.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screenshot-2021-10-18-at-13.10.22.png 1128w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screenshot-2021-10-18-at-13.10.22-690x192.png 690w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screenshot-2021-10-18-at-13.10.22-930x259.png 930w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screenshot-2021-10-18-at-13.10.22-768x214.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/h4>\n<h4><br \/><strong>Would you consider writing another book on something similar?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Absolutely! It was challenging at times to clarify things in a small space, nice and concisely with just a few sentences for some important topics. But now that it\u2019s all there, with so many, what I think are, really important tips, it\u2019s really rewarding to see.
