What could be better than an autumnal trip to Kiki, at the pet inspector\u2019s favourite place, the Lake District<\/a>. It’s one of humans\u2019 top dog-friendly destinations too, with its stunning scenery and great dog walks. Even though Kiki only has little legs, she loves the challenge of climbing up a fell – which she attacks with gusto! \"Dog<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the Lake District is undoubtedly a long journey from London, it’s definitely worth the effort. It is so beautiful, just imagine whizzing along the sheep lined windy roads, with russet coloured trees and misty mountains beyond. Kiki picked up on the excitement we were feeling as she pressed her nose to the window and wagged her tail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first night of our dog-friendly holiday, was to be a stay in a luxury shepherds hut on the Rowley Estates<\/a> in Cumbria. We knew this would be lovely as we have stayed before at Glassonby Old Hall<\/a>. A gorgeous 15c Cumbrian longhouse owned by the Rowleys who have been in Cumbria for generations. <\/span><\/p>\n

This was to be followed by a night at the stunning Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa<\/a>, situated on the shores of the Bassenthwaite Lake.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rowley Estates Shepherd’s Hut: A Cosy Countryside Escape<\/span><\/h2>\n

Our dog-friendly shepherd\u2019s hut was nestled in the Eden Valley on the edge of the beautiful Petteril River Valley. The hut itself was delightfully rustic, yet luxurious. Featuring a king size bed, Egyptian cotton bedding, oak floors, SMEG kitchen appliances, and a scandi style shower room. The bed folds away to create a sitting room, and there\u2019s a fire pit plus wood burning stove.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We were quite hungry, so had a delicious lunch at the incredibly dog-welcoming, Old Village Bakery in Melmerby. Kiki was offered treats on arrival and we had a delicious jacket potato. Then, we were off for a walk and a quick drink at the Fetherston Arms in Kirkoswald – highly recommended, before returning to our super cosy hut.<\/span><\/p>\n

We decided to take a night time stroll through the woods with Kiki for our supper at the Shepherds Inn with head torches and lantern – what an adventure! The pub was full and we enjoyed a Steak and Ale Pie. The perfect choice for a chilly night, before we returned for a night cap in front of the wood burning stove.\u00a0 After a restful night – what a joy to escape all the noise from traffic and planes- we enjoyed a Cumbrian breakfast, which Rory cooked outside on the porch.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Kiki<\/span><\/p>\n

After our hearty breakfast, we decided to embark on a proper dog walk on the way to our next stay at the Armathwaite Hall Hotel<\/a>. We chose a circular 4.5km moderately challenging hike to Raven Crag.\u00a0 I must say, I complained a bit at the start as it was quite steep and rocky. But Kiki had no problem with it and loved every minute! We loved the fabulous views at the top of Raven Crag and the wide paths back down to the car park.\u00a0Although it was a bit of a challenging assent, I would definitely recommend it.\u00a0 Back in the car we headed for Armathwaite Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n

Armathwaite Hall Hotel: A Lake District Luxury Stay<\/span><\/h2>\n

As you drive in, this dog-friendly hotel is so delightfully imposing. A grand Victorian country house set in 400 acres of deer park and woodland on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, this grand hotel features beautiful scenic trails and green spaces. It really is the perfect spot for a dog-friendly escape with the most spectacular walks right on the doorstep.<\/span><\/p>\n

We received a wonderful welcome and were immediately taken on a tour of the hotel. With its parapets, mullioned windows, huge fireplaces, grand hallways\u00a0and stags on walls, it has a unique old world charm whilst being warm and friendly.\u00a0Our canine companion, Kiki, was quite tired from her long walk up to Raven Crag but was on her very best behaviour. Even though she was longing to flop down into a cosy bed for a little nap!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bedroom: Canine Comforts and Luxury Combined<\/span><\/h3>\n

Our pet-friendly room was a wonderful garden suite with bedroom and sitting room, as well as beautiful views of the hotel\u2019s gardens and Bassenthwaite Lake. The d\u00e9cor was stylish and chic with\u00a0a blend of traditional design and modern comforts. There were also super cosy sofas and french doors to the gardens beyond. For Kiki, they\u2019d thoughtfully laid out a dog bed, which she curled up into immediately, complete with treats and welcome letter.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a quick stroll we headed to the spa where we enjoyed a dip in the indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, jacuzzi and steam room.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dog-friendly highlights: <\/span><\/strong>If your pup is anything like Kiki, who loves both luxurious comfort and a view, Armathwaite Hall’s dog-friendly rooms are the perfect choice. The rooms come with all the essentials for your four-legged friend and easy access to the beautiful walking trails.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Food: Fine Dining for Humans, Delicious Treats for Pups<\/span><\/h3>\n

One of the trip highlights for me was the chance to enjoy Armathwaite Hall\u2019s award-winning Lake View restaurant and bar. We had decided to leave Kiki in the room, as she was so tired she didn\u2019t seem to mind at all. After a G&T in the fabulous wood panelled bar, we headed to the restaurant. It was super impressive and amazingly busy for a Sunday night. We started with buttered brown shrimp followed by Cumbrian lamb, which was delicious. Not forgetting the sticky toffee pudding for dessert! Breakfast was just as spectacular. With a selection of pastries, fresh fruits, and an option for a full English that truly hit the spot.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the best things about staying at Armathwaite Hall is its proximity to dog-friendly activities and stunning outdoor spots.<\/span><\/p>\n

Morning Walk by Bassenthwaite Lake<\/span><\/h2>\n

The next morning we had a lovely stroll down to the lake.\u00a0This is a must-do walk for dog owners staying at Armathwaite Hall. The paths are well-maintained and offer lovely views of the lake and surrounding fells.\u00a0We had a really nice chat by the side of the lake with some other guests staying at the hotel – four-legged friends are such ice breakers!<\/span><\/p>\n

Wandering the Grounds of Armathwaite Hall<\/span><\/h2>\n

Armathwaite Hall’s 400 acres of private grounds are an ideal playground for pets. Kiki loved exploring the woodlands and spotting squirrels (though they were too fast for her!). We also visited the hotel’s walled garden, a picturesque spot with manicured flower beds, perfect for photos with your pup. Kiki even found a few sticks to play with in the open spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n

As we were near to Keswick our final stop was to be the Lingholm estate for lunch. Lingholm is a restored country house on the banks of Derwent Water. It’s a magical place and one of Beatrix Potter\u2019s favourite spots. The kitchen and walled garden serves the most delicious food and teas with ingredients sourced from their own gardens and bakery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Visiting the Lake District Wildlife Park<\/span><\/h2>\n

For a unique day out, you could also visit the dog-friendly Lake District Wildlife Park, located just a stone\u2019s throw from Armathwaite Hall. While furry friends aren’t allowed inside the park itself, the hotel offers pet-sitting services. The park is home to over 100 species, from meerkats and zebras to birds of prey. It’s a great activity for the whole family.<\/span><\/p>\n

Final Thoughts: A Perfect Lake District Getaway for Pups and People<\/span><\/h2>\n

We loved our visit to the Lake District<\/a>, and we were so lucky with the weather which was absolutely glorious. We also loved our stay at Armathwaite with non stuffy atmosphere,\u00a0pet-friendly amenities, and beautiful natural surroundings. It was a place where we all felt pampered. For anyone looking to bring their dog on a luxury retreat, Armathwaite Hall<\/a> should be top of the list!<\/span><\/p>\n

The attention to detail \u2013 from the thoughtful setup in our room to the friendly staff and exceptional food \u2013 made this a truly memorable getaway. Kiki is already dreaming of her next visit, and I have to agree, we\u2019ll all be back soon!<\/span><\/p>\n
