But amidst all the fun and frolics we are expecting to enjoy with our lovely furry companions its important to keep them safe over the festive season.\u00a0 Here are our top tips for making sure your pup stays happy and healthy over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/s\/products\/collections-christmas?\">Christmas<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shutterstock_227627728.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-27455\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shutterstock_227627728-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"shutterstock_227627728\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shutterstock_227627728-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shutterstock_227627728-930x620.jpg 930w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shutterstock_227627728.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Deck the halls with holly and baubles:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christmas decorations may seem like fun toys for your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/pets\/dogs\/0\">dog<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but they can cause injury especially if eaten. Glass baubles and holly can cause cuts, while small decorations can be swallowed and cause foreign body blockages in the intestines. Make sure\u00a0 you keep decorations out of your pet\u2019s reach at all times<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. The candles shine so brightly:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a circuit breaker for all Christmas lights, especially those that trail behind the Christmas tree, to prevent your pet getting an electric shock while investigating your bright, festive lights.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Later we&#8217;ll have some pumpkin pie:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to give your pet his own Christmas dinner this year? Avoid toxic foods such as onions, garlic (or foods which have been cooked in or contain onion and garlic), raisins, sultanas, dates and grapes, chocolate and alcohol. Also, avoid fatty foods such as potatoes cooked in goose fat or butter as these can cause pancreatitis. If you want to make a special pet dinner, the ideal treat is plain, cooked turkey and some delicious crunchy vegetables! Also, mistletoe and holly berries can cause gastroenteritis, so make sure your pet doesn\u2019t have a nibble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-27534\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/christmas-dinner-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/christmas-dinner-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/christmas-dinner-930x620.jpg 930w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/christmas-dinner.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Rocking around the Christmas tree:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christmas tree needles can get stuck in paws or in mouths if chewed. Try to clear away fallen needles where possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Time for presents:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some dogs will be able to sniff out tasty treats under the tree, and will be delighted by the challenge of unwrapping them!! Keep edible presents out of your pets\u2019 reach, especially chocolate and alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-22791\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/christmas-travel-3-690x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/christmas-travel-3-690x396.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.petspyjamas.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/christmas-travel-3.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. The\u00a0<\/strong><strong>fire is so delightful:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have an open fire, make sure you use a fireguard to stop your dog getting too close. If you have turned the central heating on, check that your dog hasn\u2019t fallen asleep underneath as they can burn the fur on their back!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>7. Walking in a winter wonderland:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When walking your dog in the cold weather, be careful of the cold ground on his paws. Avoid walking over frosty grass and watch out for salt grit, which can cause contact dermatitis. Wash your dog\u2019s feet after a walk in the snow with baby wipes or a wet towel.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>8.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Watch out for your dog pulling the Christmas tree &#8211; he may become tangled or cause the tree to topple over. Ensure your tree is stable by investing in a sturdy base.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22764\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/safe-christmas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>9. And a happy New Year:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fireworks over New Year can be a source of anxiety to many cats and dogs. Make sure your pet is calm and comfortable by using a pheromone diffuser like Adaptil or Feliway and making sure your pet has a hideaway place where he feels safe in case it starts to sound scary outside. Close the curtains and turn on the TV or radio to help with distraction, but don&#8217;t fuss or comfort your pet if he is showing signs of fear &#8211; this only confirms that your pet is right to be afraid.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>10.
