First things first, it’s not about size when it comes to breeds<\/a> that are best for apartment living. Some larger breeds are less active than smaller breeds, and even then, every dog needs regular exercise. Of course, in an ideal world, all homes for dogs would be sprawling country houses with acres of land, but we know that just isn’t possible for everyone and that people living in city apartments can offer fabulous homes for four-legged friends, with the appropriate veterinary guidance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our list is certainly not definitive, but is here to help you make that important decision \u2013 which breed to adopt if you’re an urban dweller? We’ve taken the following factors into consideration \u2013 propensity for barking and yapping, required exercise and the amount of shedding….<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mastiff<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

Contrary to popular belief, Mastiffs are gentle giants, who don’t bark without cause and require a few 20-minute walks every day, making them the ideal choice for apartment-living, providing you have space for a large dog bed<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is fairly quiet, apart from when they spot someone new outside the window! Although he was bred for palace-living, he is happy in an apartment if he has regular walks and companionship.<\/p>\n

Chihuahua<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

\"chihuahua,<\/a><\/p>\n

Apart from their talkative tendencies (Chihuahuas can yap, which isn’t ideal for blocks of flats with thin walls), Chihuahuas make brilliant city pets. Their grooming<\/a> requirements are minimal, and apart from a couple of daily walks, they are happy with indoor activity (and the obvious potty breaks).<\/p>\n

Pekes are fairly quiet and their diminutive size makes them a good choice for smaller flats. They love walks and will benefit from regular exercise and a patient owner, as they can be difficult to house train.<\/p>\n

These hirsute companions don’t bark much and love playtime at home, although they must be exercised regularly to avoid behavioural problems. If you choose to keep the Lhasa’s coat long, be prepared for frequent grooming, but he also looks just as cute with it kept shorter.<\/p>\n

Bichon Frise<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

This little white dog, which sheds very little, is a great choice for those who are prone to allergies. The Bichon Frise doesn’t yap and is generally happy and easy to train.<\/p>\n

Tibetan Spaniel<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

This small breed loves long walks but is just as happy snuggling up indoors. The Tibetan Spaniel doesn’t tend to bark excessively, so they won’t disturb the neighbours if you live in an apartment block.<\/p>\n

Frenchies are loving and happy dogs that require minimal grooming. They need two walks a day and love cuddling up on the sofa with their owners. Like most brachycephalic dogs\u00a0though, French Bulldogs can be prone to overheating so ensure your flat is cool or has air conditioning for the summer months.<\/p>\n

You may think the Greyhound needs a lot of exercise, but in fact this laid-back breed is known as the ’45-mph couch potato’! As long as you have some outside space or a nearby park for them to run for a few minutes, they’re more content snuggling up on the sofa than marathon-running.<\/p>\n

Pugs are known for their sweet dispositions, funny characters and tendency to follow their owners from room to room. They tend to get along with other dogs, as well as cats<\/a>, and don’t bark unnecessarily. Because of their short noses, care must be taken not to over – exert Pugs \u2013 they will benefit from regular, short walks \u2013 and overheating, so ensure your flat has suitable ventilation.
