Internally the property is formed over two levels with generous sized accommodation. The ground floor has an attractive open plan living/dining/kitchen space, which is finished to a good standard. The kitchen area is well equipped, more than enough to prepare and enjoy a nice romantic meal or cater for four if you have guests for dinner. On the first floor, there is a kingsize bedroom and the bathroom is in a slightly quirky location off the bedroom providing an almost ‘en-suite’ bathroom.
With some of the prettiest views to the rear, over the rolling countryside of the Borders and towards Northumberland, you’ll find yourself wishing to explore some of the walking routes of the area. Just minutes from Berwick-upon-Tweed and the Northumbrian coast and easily accessible to Edinburgh and central Scotland by car, this property would be suitable as a base to enjoy the surrounding attractions for the duration of your stay.
The village has local shops and restaurants, however the nearby towns of Duns and Berwick-Upon-Tweed are stocked with activities and attractions to suit all ages both day and night. Without a doubt, whatever the time of year we would suggest a trip and long walk along one of Northumberland’s beautiful white sandy beaches. This charming terrace cottage provides a cosy safe haven away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Located in the small village of Walkerburn, nearby the historic town of Peebles, The Bothy at Caberston is minutes’ walk from the River Tweed. You can find some of the worlds most highly regarded salmon pools in addition to some of the most beautiful walks, whatever the season. The cottage is surprisingly spacious and well equipped with everything you need in your home away from home.
Guests will enjoy an open plan living space with a living area, dining area and kitchen area where you will find all you need to prepare meals. Take advantage of the seriously good fayre provided by the coffee shop where the cakes are too delicious and out of this world.
The property accepts dogs either in the Bothy itself, in the external doggy bedroom or if your pooch prefers the outdoors then comfy kennels are available. If your pet is somewhat larger and requires a trailer and saddle then Caberston Farm can provide ’Bed and Bale’ for horses and if you need some time away then the farm staff can even look after your four-legged friend to give you a little break. We can also organise horse hire and hacks for you. Grass livery and hay are available from the 20-horse livery business on the farm. The farm stretches across 200 acres and while principally it is a sheep farm it now has a Christmas tree farm, horse livery, sheep dog training academy and forestry.
The owners will be happy to tell you the best bits to explore and where to find the most beautiful walks and views. The area around the farm is famed by mountain bikers as two popular routes are nearby. ’The Golfie’ neighbours the farm while ’Feed the Pony’ actually runs through the farm. Set in the midst of fabulous rolling countryside with far reaching views over the surrounding hills, this comfortable, contemporary, semi-detached apartment is adjacent to the owners’ home. Single-storey, it is situated on the edge of a smallholding with sheep, midway between the picturesque market town of Biggar and the small village of Broughton, 3 miles away and home of Broughton Brewery and a tea room, doubling as a local pub at the weekend.
There is good walking and cycling from the doorstep with Broughton Heights and Trahenna Hill well worth the climb for the glorious views. Biggar has a great selection of excellent local food producers and hosts a surprising range of events throughout the year. Peebles, 15 miles away has good restaurants, galleries and independent shops. Glentress mountain bike trails are 17 miles away and Innerleithen 21½ miles. With stunning views that the Borders is famous for, The Annex at Fernyrig is the idyllic retreat for a couple looking to enjoy some time together, or to explore the Scottish Borders and the north of England. Just a few hunderd yards north of the actual border on the River Tweed, this beautiful, semi-detached property, adjacent to the owner’s home, was completely updated and upgraded in late 2019 to a high standard, with great attention to detail. It now boasts features such as underfloor heated bamboo and ceramic tiled floors, cosy wood burner and a south west-facing garden to enjoy the views across the Tweed Valley to the Cheviots and beyond.
The living room has a wood burner for those colder evenings and while the TV is there, we’re convinced that you’ll spend more time looking out the windows. Also finished well is the kitchen with modern appliances and a spacious layout with a dining area. A door in the hall separates the bathroom and bedroom from the rest of the property. The main bathroom has underfloor heating and a luxury 4 piece suite with bath and separate walk-in double shower. The property sleeps two guests in a comfortable and well-proportioned double room, and has the ability to accommodate a further two guests on a double sofa bed in the living room. Well behaved pets are welcome in the property and outside there is a purpose built kennel if required as well as parking for 2 cars.
Surrounding villages and towns nearby include Birgham, Coldstream and Kelso, with the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (BR main Newcastle/Edinburgh rail link) and coastal beaches some 17 miles to the east. Fishing can be arranged on the nearby River Tweed and during the appropriate seasons, the owner may be able to arrange some country sports for guests. Dawyck Botanic Garden and Stobo Castle Health Spa are situated locally, whilst the market towns of Peebles and Biggar, with their excellent range of pubs and restaurants, are both a 15-minute drive. The living room of Nettlebush Cottage is wonderfully light, and has a lovely wood burner to sit in front of whilst spending a cosy night in. French doors, with level access, lead to the patio and the steep natural garden, and it’s a delight to wake up in the morning to enjoy the view down to the River Tweed and the hills above the valley. The property is set on a working sheep farm with good walks from the door, and the John Buchan Way begins in Broughton, 2½ miles away. Fishing, cycling and mountain biking are all local pursuits with the facilities at Glentress, 20 minutes’ drive. Edinburgh is a scenic, hour’s drive north and is a wonderful place to experience at any time of year, but especially for the vibrant atmosphere during the Edinburgh Festival in August and spectacular celebrations at New Year. The 200 acres of glorious parkland surrounding Mellerstain House, one of Scotland’s grandest stately homes, designed and built by William and Robert Adam, provide a wonderful setting for these two delightful cottages (S4568 and S4569). Visitors are welcome to roam the grounds including the fabulous Italian-style terraced gardens which command panoramic views over the lake to the distant Cheviot Hills. The scenic and historic attractions of the Border country are all close at hand and the beaches of Berwick and Holy Island are also easily accessible. Kelso, 6 miles, offers shops, inns and restaurants and is home of Floors Castle and the famous Kelso Horse Races, whilst Edinburgh, with its magnificent castle, museums, galleries and excellent shopping, is only a 35-mile drive. Fly fishing can be arranged locally, several golf courses are nearby and shops and pubs are just 3½ miles away. Beautifully appointed and very comfortable, these two properties offer a unique holiday opportunity. Clock House, ref S4568, has been beautifully converted to a high standard to form part of the Old Clock House dating from the early 18th century. Adjoining the Clock House is Courtyard Cottage, ref S4569, which has also been lovingly converted to a high standard and boasts three en-suite bedrooms. The courtyard coffee shop serves delicious home cooking on ‘house open’ days - and special occasions, large and small can be catered for by arrangement in the state rooms of Mellerstain House. Sometimes we all just need an escape. Here in the heart of Craik Forest, you can do just that! if you’re in the mood, then flick the switch and you’ll be tech free, since there is no phone signal here in Craik. That said, with another flick of the switch, the high speed Wi-Fi is back on and you’re connected to the world again. Just 12 miles from the border town of Hawick you will have the happy balance of not being away from it all but not cut off - and there are local shops are nearby in most of the smaller villages. In terms of activities you will not need to travel far to find something exciting to do.
