This detached, Grade II listed, thatched holiday cottage, dates back to the 15th century and was the birthplace and home of John Middleton, the 9ft 3in giant known as the Childe of Hale. The village, home to two local pubs serving food, is on the Trans Pennine Trail and the area is great for walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers. Visit include Speke Hall, Liverpool, Albert Dock, Knowsley Safari Park, Chester, Haydock and Aintree racecourses. The north west also has miles of unspoilt coastline including beaches at Ainsdale, Formby and Crosby. Shop 500 yards, pub 150 yards, restaurant 1½ miles.

Offering a rural experience, Drumble Lodge can be found at the end of a winding country lane on a working farm amidst beautiful Cheshire countryside. The location is peaceful and serene, where you can enjoy the sounds of bird song throughout the day and the distinctive calls of owls at night. The farm on which the lodge stands has been registered as a wedding venue and will accommodate smaller weddings. Pet sheep and goats that meander around the paddock next to the lodge, and in the distance, you’ll see cows grazing in the meadow. Despite the rural setting, the property has Sky Link Wi-Fi with 200 megabites per second.
A selection of outdoor seating areas are available where you can relax, unwind and once the sun sets gaze at the stars beyond through the telescope provided. A traditional dog friendly, food serving pub is a mere 10-minute walk, and ample footpaths radiate from the area just waiting to be explored. The pretty market town of Congleton can be reached in around 10 minutes and is home to ample amenities including a selection of supermarkets and shops together with many bars and restaurants.
The National Trusts Biddulph Grange Country Park and Little Moreton Hall are also accessible in around a 10-minute drive. You can take a waterside stroll along the River Dane, cycle the tranquil traffic free Biddulph Valley Way, or walk to the famous atmospheric ruins of Mow Cop Castle and lesser-known Old Man of Mow.
The Peak District National Park is around a 30-minute drive and the city of Manchester can be reached in under an hour on a direct train from Congleton station. For those with children Delamere Forest, Manley Mere and Britain’s premier theme park Alton Towers can be reached in around 45 minutes and then finally the city of Chester, Blue Planet Aquarium and Chester Zoo in around an hour.

Spruce Shepherd’s Hut can be found nestled within the enchanting surroundings of a Christmas tree farm in the Cheshire market town of Wilmslow. The shepherd’s hut is accessed via a rough track and is set on a working farm shared by wildlife including badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and bats, as well as many different sorts of birds so there’s always something going on. There is an on-site tea room open from March to October (Thursday–Sunday) and specialises in Cheshire-based produce, but also has a Caribbean influence. It’s fully licensed so expect bacon rolls and home made cake together with the odd cocktail!
If you can bear to venture out, Wilmslow centre is around a 15-minute walk and is a shoppers’ paradise with designer boutiques and upmarket interior designers, as well as chic charity shops and a department store. Foodies won’t be disappointed with lots of places to eat and drink and there’s even an independent boutique cinema and small theatre. You can take a stroll through the picturesque Carrs Park in the heart of the town centre, or by the River Bollin towards Styal Village and National Trust Quarry Bank Mill.
Lindow Common, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Lindow Moss, are both adjacent to the farm for walks amongst the peatland and the cities of Manchester, Chester and Liverpool together with the Peak District National Park are all easily accessible. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway or a peaceful solo retreat, Spruce Shepherd’s Hut is the perfect haven for a magical experience away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

This charming detached cottage has plenty of space for all the family to enjoy. The living room has very comfortable sofas and a warming wood burner for those chiller evenings, there’s also a separate seating area in the conservatory. There are two bedrooms, comprising one double and one kingsize, both of which have been stylishly decorated with quality mattresses and furnishings. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you’ll need for your stay along with separate dining room. Outside is a large garden area with seating and steps down to a picture perfect stream.

The old market town of Malpas, which is actually classed as a large village, is under 2 miles away, and has plenty of shops and other amenities. Malpas is home to a Norman motte and bailey castle and consists of half-timbered ancient buildings, a Grade I listed church and Cholmondeley Castle. The property is ideally placed for visiting Chester, North Wales and Shropshire and is within easy reach of a plethora of activities. The historic walled city of Chester has much to offer including Chester racecourse and Chester Zoo, as well as excellent shopping and restaurants. Tarporley, the Delamere Forest and Beeston Castle are also nearby. Llangollen in North Wales is also a great place to explore, with its horse drawn canal barges, steam railway, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which you can canoe over, and white water activities such as rafting, tubing and gorge walking, slightly further afield is Snowdonia National Park. Best of all is the huge range of walks and cycling routes directly from the doorstep.

A warm welcome at Oakenbank barn awaits you with its open plan living area with a modern kitchen alongside a dining table to seat all guests. A relaxing wood burner can be enjoyed in the living space with comfy seating and a wall mounted television, so you don’t miss out on those favourite programmes. Within the open plan space guests can choose to stay in the double four poster bed whilst the wood burner crackles away. The galleried area in the barn has two single beds for guests and a modern family bathroom can be found downstairs for guests. There are stunning, uninterrupted views down the valley which can be enjoyed whilst seated on the patio furniture in the lovely courtyard of this pretty barn.


When ready to get out and about in the local area, you can choose to walk straight from the front door to start your day with a visit to the Ingersley Vale Waterfall or popular local landmark white Nancy, or maybe just a short drive away for a hike up Macc View for outstanding scenery. History buffs will relish in a trip to the nearby town of Macclesfield where they can discover the rich and captivating history of Armoury Towers and Fence Alms Houses or the Priests House that rests in the quintessential village of Prestbury.


Nearby Macclesfield is a market town and civil parish resting in Cheshire, England, on the outer fringes of the Peak District National Park. Boasting a wide range of pubs and restaurants for that fine dining experience, as well as some shops and supermarkets for picking up any last-minute essentials and indulging in a shopping spree, also offering Pott Shrigley (only 1 mile away) Tytherington (approximately 4miles) and Macclesfield Golf Club (approximately 5miles). The Peak District National Park offers a large number of country sites with ample walking and cycling opportunities. Further afield is the thriving city of Manchester which boasts plenty of popular tourist attractions, including Old Trafford stadium if you’re a Manchester United fan, or the Etihad stadium for the blue half of manchester, the popular theatre and art museum The Lowry and even family-friendly activities. Nantwich is a charming market town set beside the River Weaver with a rich history and second only to Chester in its wealth of historic buildings. The High Street itself has many of the town’s finest buildings and really comes alive during the summer months with floral displays throughout the streets. You’ll also find a seasonal outdoor Brine Pool (May-Sep) and popular events throughout the year include the legendary Jazz, Blues and Music Festival at Easter and the world-famous International Cheese Awards in July.
Beyond Nantwich, nearby Audlem (15 minutes away) offers a range of shops that attract many visitors, or you can cross the border into Shropshire and visit Whitchurch and the beautiful countryside that surrounds it. Jodrell Bank is a must, and a little further afield is the county town Shrewsbury, or the big city entertainment of Chester, Manchester and Liverpool which can be reached in around an hour’s drive or by train from Nantwich station.
Those who like to explore the great outdoors can pick up the Sandstone Trail in nearby Tarporley and visit the castles of Beeston and Cholmondeley, or head to Delamere Forest, all of which can be reached in around 30 minutes. With the North Wales coastline also just an hour away, you really are spoilt for choice.
