There are plenty of walks meandering through the Cornish countryside or with stunning views from the coastal footpath of glistening, sandy beaches or coves tucked in against dramatic cliffs ravaged by the Atlantic rollers. Withiel is situated 5 miles between the towns of Wadebridge and Bodmin; and 15 miles from Newquay and Padstow, as well as Polzeath on the North coast and Fowey on the South coast. Newquay is famous for its excellent surfing beaches. Port Isaac of “Doc Martin” fame is also about 15 miles away, and The Eden Project is only a short drive.
Wadebridge, once a market town, is now more widely known as being on The Camel Trail, the cycle route out to Padstow from the depths of Bodmin Moor on the old railway route. From Padstow you could take a boat trip across the Camel Estuary to Rock and lounge on the beautiful beach that stretches all the way around to Daymer Bay. Less than 2 miles from Bodmin. This area is a great place to explore by bicycle and you can either bring your own or hire them locally and roam along the nearby Camel Trail. Barn Cottage is an ideal base for touring the whole of Cornwall with a host of nearby sandy beaches such as Polzeath, Harlyn and Trevone. Classic Cornish villages such as Fowey, Mevagissey, Port Isaac and Boscastle are all within easy reach, as is the bustling fishing town of Looe. The famous Eden Project is well worth a visit as is the stately home at Lanhydrock, both just a few minutes away. The beautiful River Fowey is accessible for walks at various points nearby including Golitha Falls and Respryn, with their ancient beech woodlands, and in the former Cornish capital of Lostwithiel. Lanhydrock golf course is approximately one mile away for those desiring a leisurely round or two!
The oldest part of Bodmin is made up of mainly granite buildings clustered around the Bodmin Beacon. The Beacon is a 144 feet tall obelisk in memory of Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert. The area around the Beacon which has woodland and traditional hay meadow was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1994. The 18-mile Camel Trail follows the route of the old railway along traffic free paths, providing a flat cycle through Bodmin and Wadebridge out to Padstow, eminently suitable for families. The dining conservatory creates an al fresco ambience of dining under the stars but remains cosy with underfloor heating, and winter evenings will be toasty warm in the dual aspect kitchen/living room with the lovely slate fireplace surrounding the wood burner.
Trebarwith Strand Beach is close by and at low tide a large expanse of golden sand is exposed, with plenty of rock pools and a number of caves, just be careful to always check the tide times. Tintagel is well worth a visit, cross the new suspension bridge to Tintagel Castle and Island where medieval fortifications combine a history of the dark ages with the legend of King Arthur to produce a wonderful day out with many different eateries and pubs to sample as a bonus. The coast path stretches along some of the most rugged cliffs in the southwest, where majestic promontories overlook secluded beaches with golden sands and crashing Atlantic surf. A quick drive will also take you to Boscastle, site of the infamous floods in 2004, or the traditional fishing village of Port Isaac where lovely narrow lanes lead to the charming harbour and beach that Port Isaac is so famous for.
