- Bude, EnglandThis historic, spacious, terraced, 500-year-old former church house sits peacefully beside the village green and war memorial, in front of the 12th-century Norman church of St Andrews. The house has been lovingly restored and retains many original features.
The large living room and dining area, with its 16th-century ceiling beams, are great for a family gathering, or a cosy night in beside the wood burner. There is a small part-covered, shady, internal courtyard room with a flagstone floor, fountain, window seat and small outdoor table and chairs.
All 4 double bedrooms have either cupboard or hanging rack space for clothes/storage. The second floor bedroom runs the length of the cottage and has huge, original 16th-century A-frame roof beams and three, heritage Velux-style windows. Removable blackout blinds are available for guests who wish to use them.
The cottage is just a few steps from the village post office, shop and an excellent hair salon. Just beyond that are the two village pubs, The Tree Inn and The Kings Arms.
Jalna is the perfect coastal holiday choice close to the Victorian seaside town of Bude with its glorious sandy beaches and breath-taking South West coastal path scenery. It is the ideal escape venue in which to spend time with friends and family.
Bude is incredibly popular all year round, with its castle heritage centre, a vibrant town centre and an array of restaurants and bars, together with two sandy beaches and the nearby coastal path. It retains its Victorian charm whilst offering something for everyone. The food scene around Stratton and Bude has really taken off. There are regular food markets and artisan pop-ups in addition to the array of restaurants, bakeries and wine merchants.
The Bude and North Cornwall Golf Club is close by. Paddle boarding, surfing, golf, tennis, horse riding and fishing are all on offer in the area. The internationally acclaimed annual jazz festival is fantastic and not to be missed. The Splash leisure centre, with an indoor swimming pool and ten-pin bowling alley, is a short drive away.
Widemouth Bay is only 3 miles further down the coast and has a stunning beach. The picturesque fishing villages of Rock and Padstow are within easy driving distance, as is the mysterious Tintagel Castle of Arthurian legend. This superb conversion has been completed to the highest of standards and features reverse style Accommodation with open plan living space on the first floor to take advantage of the character of the old beams and the stunning views over the countryside to Widemouth. The Owners have converted Roof Tops with great attention to detail with wood flooring and granite work tops in the kitchen and en-suite shower rooms for both bedrooms. There is a cosy gas wood burner for the colder months. There is a great patio and a private garden area with a small lawned area. Both bedrooms have French doors opening onto the slate tiled patio.
Roof Tops is situated on the edge of the village of Stratton, a peaceful location with countryside all around. Stratton has two local pubs serving excellent food and a post office, all within a 5-minute walk. The village is just over 1 mile from the coastal town of Bude with extensive sandy beaches, sea swimming pool, leisure centre, surfing and a wide variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. There is also a range of golf courses in the vicinity. Stratton is a great base from which to explore many of Cornwall and Devon’s attractions.
Bude is Cornwall’s most northern town and has been a favourite seaside resort since Victorian times. The town has excellent facilities and a wide selection of interesting, independent shops. This idyllic area has a large amount of bird life for the dedicated twitcher and some wonderful, scenic walks along the Southwest coastal path. The centre of Bude is a lively hub with concerts, dances and fetes as well as other events throughout the season, including an annual Carnival Week. Appleloft is a charming stone cottage located in the hamlet of Pencuke, near to Crackington Haven beach and 8 miles from the pounding surf at Widemouth Bay. The community shop at Higher Crackington is within walking distance, a great place to stop for coffee, a delicious pasty or to sit and admire the outstanding views. Bude is only 10 miles away, an easy 20-minute drive.
The cottage enjoys a rural setting and has large gardens to both the front and rear of the property. There is ample parking and a gated drive way. On the ground floor there is a comfy lounge with a cosy wood burner, the newly refurbished kitchen and a twin bedroom. Three steps lead to the new open plan dining room area and to the upgraded bathroom. Stairs from the lounge lead to a large, but private, galleried bedroom offering a super kingsize bed, lots of storage space and delightful views over the front garden. This room has an ensuite cloakroom with vanity unit, toilet and towel rail. The flooring in this room is a quirky, historic feature from the days the room was used to store apples.
The area is great for walkers with spectacular coastline, wooded valleys and rolling farmland. The coastal path can easily be accessed from Crackington Haven Beach or Boscastle. In the cottage you will find a large range of walking books and maps to help you plan your days out. If beach life is your thing, you’ll be spoilt for choice in North Cornwall. Bude is a fabulous coastal town that is establishing itself as a centre for all sorts of outdoor adventure sports. Bude has something for everyone including great beaches for relaxing, rock pools for investigating and café’s to watch it all from. Once visited, you will want to come back time and time again. The rolling waves are great for surfing and there are surf schools catering for all abilities. Bude’s outdoor sea pool provides all year round free swimming. The footpaths by the restored canal and the independent shops and cafés offer a gentle alternative to the adrenaline fuelled beach activities. Bude also has a superb golf course, an indoor swimming pool, bowling alley/indoor play area, cinema, a nearby riding school and a fascinating heritage centre at Bude Castle. It has a good selection of local shops, three supermarkets, cafés, pubs, restaurants and an excellent information centre.
There are many pretty coves and inlets to discover within a short drive of the cottage. Boscastle, with historical connections to Thomas Hardy, and the stunning Tintagel, inextricably linked to the legend of King Arthur, are nearby places to explore. Dr Martin fans might like to visit the villages of Port Isaac and Port Gaverne, film locations for the fictional Port Wenn. Further afield the pretty fishing port of Padstow, famous for its Rick Stein restaurant, is a must, and for Poldark enthusiasts, you can soak up the atmosphere of ’Nampara Cove’ at Porthcothan and enjoy the windswept beach and crashing waves of ’Waleggans beach’ at Hollywell Bay. For a different landscape you can explore the vast moorland areas of Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. Both are within easy reach and offer wild, remote walking routes dotted with the remains of prehistoric civilizations, stone circles, weather worn tors and wild ponies.
