The second property on-site, Granny’s Cottage, is a charming, detached retreat with a romantic, four poster bed in the master bedroom. Both properties make an ideal location for a family holiday, not only in summer but also for lovely spring and autumn breaks, as well as winter and Christmas getaways for a special family gathering.
The gardens and grounds at Lanwithan are simply gorgeous, with mature oak trees and impressive giant firs growing alongside colourful camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons. The Farmhouse and Granny’s Cottage share the extensive grounds with a small cluster of other holiday cottages on-site which have been converted from the original farm buildings. Guests are welcome to wander and explore the grounds, take in the stunning views across fields and stroll down to the banks of the River Fowey. The friendly owners live on-site in the manor house and are always happy to help. Lostwithiel itself has a unique range of shops including crafts, gifts, antiques and an auction house. Beach 7 miles. Lostwithiel, EnglandA welcoming Cornish cream tea awaits guests at this 100-year-old cottage that sits in a quiet and quaint lane minutes from the centre of the ancient town of Lostwithiel, which lies at the bottom of a wooded valley. Lostwithiel lays claim to being the centre of the county’s antique industry and slow food movement, and with its collection of antique shops, fine dining restaurants and award-winning pubs, its easy to see why. The town sits on the River Fowey and boasts its own Norman castle, Restormel Castle National Trust, as well as craft shops, deli’s and local bakers all providing the local feeling that the town is renowned for. Close by are woodland and river walks, kayaking along the famous River Fowey, horse riding, a local golf course and leisure centre.
The seafaring town of Fowey with its literary heritage is approximately 8 miles by road but less by river. The small pretty village of Lerryn nearby, also perched on the river, was the inspiration for ‘The Wind in The Willows’ and a walk along the riverbank is a must. The Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan and numerous National Trust properties and gardens are also close by and provide lovely days out in this special area of Cornwall. Lanhydrock House, a National Trust stately home and estate is nearby and boasts off road walking and cycle trail through lush woodland, bike hire and a café are available. Horse riding, kayaking, sailing, fishing and boat trips are all available close by. Truro, St Austell and the north coast towns of Padstow, Port Isaac and Newquay are all easily reached from this perfectly situated historic town. - Lostwithiel, EnglandThese three well-presented cottages, Cloisters Cottage (ref UKC1870), Stable Cottage (ref UKC1871) and Stable End (ref UKC1872) have been converted from parts of a historic building on the outskirts of the ancient Stannary town of Lostwithiel, providing charming holiday accommodation with a little local history attached. Peregrine Hall has 9 acres of woodland, gardens, terraces and walks for you to enjoy or simply relax with a cream tea on the terrace. The house stands on a hill overlooking the town of Lostwithiel, and was a gun site during the English Civil War. It was first known as St Faith’s House of Mercy, a refuge for ‘wayward girls’, who were rescued from Bodmin jail and put to work running a laundry which served Lanhydrock Estate and the local community.
The town of Lostwithiel is well known for being the centre of Cornwall’s antiques industry and is well served with great restaurants, local award winning pubs, craft shops and cafés on the River Fowey. This beautiful river is spanned by an ancient bridge with its own little beach and picnic area, and is within walking distance from Peregrine Hall. The riverside walks along its banks are a must, and if you are lucky you may see kingfishers, otters and other wildlife. Restormel Castle and The Duchy of Cornwall Nurseries are also close by and a must for all that visit the area. Lostwithiel provides the perfect base for touring the Duchy of Cornwall from its north coast with Padstow, Port Isaac and Polzeath, to the south coast with Fowey, Polperro and Mevagissey. All are lovely fishing villages and coastal towns, with many attractions for everyone, from sea fishing and kayaking to surfing and sailing.
The Lanhydrock Estate is a gothic stately home, gardens and grounds which is closely linked with Lostwithiel and is a stunning example of a National Trust house. There are also woodland walks, off road cycle trails and bike hire along with a museum and tea rooms. For the energetic, try golf at Lanhydrock, cycling along the nearby Camel Trail, or a walk to Respryn Bridge can all be enjoyed. Just a short walk to the railway station which links Plymouth to Penzance, taking in some of the most stunning scenery and views in the county. Enter via the sturdy front door complete with brass fittings and you are led into an inviting light and airy hallway. To the left is the living room incorporating super-comfy corner sofa, Smart TV and cosy wood burning stove, just great for those chilly evenings. The large dining room has great natural light with table, four chairs and a wooden bench seat. A smart sofa and feature fireplace complete this excellent room. Just 6 miles from the nearest beach at Par, you will find a wide expanse of sand backed by dunes and flanked by rugged cliffs. The town of St Austell lies nearby, with a range of shops and restaurants. Once a major mining industry flourished here and there is an fascinating museum portraying this incredible story. Fowey, with its narrow streets, boutique shops, pubs and thriving harbour awaits, whilst the ancient town of Looe and nearby Polperro, both steeped in tales of smuggling, are must visits. Inland, the unique Eden Project, with huge Biomes housing the world’s largest indoor rainforest is an amazing place whilst take a trip back in time with a visit to Charlestown, with its fleet of tall ships and the setting for many films and TV series.
