- Porthtowan, EnglandBolivar Barn is set in an ideal location to explore The Southwest of Cornwall, set in spectacular countryside. This was a former pig barn which has been converted sympathetically to retain as many original features as possible. Adjacent to the owner’s property it offers a cosy and comfortable retreat, the private garden terrace is a wonderful place to sit, enjoy the sun and admire the beautiful countryside, having morning coffee, a light lunch, an evening meal or just relaxing with a drink. For the colder evenings snuggle up next to the wood burner with a hot drink and enjoy the views from the comfy sofa.
This part of the world is known for its rugged coastline a favourite for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts as well as it is for its mining heritage. Why not explore the area by following a path from behind the barn, look for the old disused quarry that has been converted into an open theatre. If you want to take a closer look at the old Engine Houses Carn Brea is about 20 mins away, the view takes in both coasts, with a huge 90ft granite obelisk, in memory of Francis Basset. There is a door on the side leading to a viewing platform! Take a torch and wear sensible footwear. For those that would prefer flatter terrain then drive 20 mins to the outstanding Tehidy Woods Country Park, there are over 9 miles of pathways and 250 acres of woods and lake. You may be able to spot the tame squirrels, swans, geese and ducks as well as an abundance of birds. It can get a little muddy, so waterproof footwear is a good idea. It is also a great place to cycle, if you haven’t bought a bike with you, you can hire them from Mountain Bike Hire in Illogan. If you want to do more cycling then a must is the Portreath to Bissoe trail, start at the beach, stop at the pub and then return to the beach, a really good way to spend a few hours, mainly on bridleways and country lanes. If the weather takes a turn for the worse head to Heartlands Visitor Attraction, just over 9 miles away, free to enter it embodies Cornish heritage and culture.
This is a dog friendly attraction, visit the Diaspora Botanical Gardens or follow the World Heritage Exhibitions, the year long events programme has a mix of farmers markets, music events, art exhibitions, theatre, visit the web site to see what is on before you arrive. Lanner village is 2 mins away, it has a village store, bakery, fish and chip shop as well as two pubs, so you don’t even need to go far! For our four legged friends there are dog friendly beaches at Portreath, Porthtowan and Durgan, they will adore the smells at Tehidy and Carn Brea, at the end of a busy day everyone will be happy to get back and put their feet up!!
