On a quiet lane leading only to the cliffs, they have been very tastefully converted from a spacious Victorian house and are stunningly set in several acres of shared natural grounds; home to a wonderful variety of wildlife which can easily be seen from the steep, private beach path and the cottages themselves. Free beach gear is available to borrow (surfboards, buckets and spades, windbreaks, plus some wetsuits) and there is private storage for visitors’ own equipment. The beach at Whitesand is magnificent and offers a splendid mile of sand which has been awarded Blue Flag status and is excellent for surfing (lifeguards operate throughout the summer). There is a ban on dogs from 1st May to 30th September but dogs are permitted year round on nearby Gwenver Beach, the next beach along the coast path. Sennen Cove, ½ mile, is a picturesque little fishing village looking out over the bay. It offers shops, pub, restaurants, even a lifeboat station, all within walking distance. There are some beautiful walks along the coast towards Cape Cornwall in one direction, and beyond Land’s End in the other.
The famous outdoor Minack Theatre is only 3 miles away and Penzance, 7 miles, boasts a mainline station, shops, inns, swimming-pool, sailing and tennis. There is a golf course at St Just, 4 miles, and facilities for squash and badminton are available locally. Picturesque St Ives (a renowned haunt of artists) is 15 miles away along the spectacular north coast. This triangular, open-air lido, filled with seawater, is an iconic feature of Penzance. Penzance is a sunny, bohemian coastal town, full of ancient nooks and crannies, old buildings and quirky streets. Nowhere is its character more vividly felt than on the town’s oldest street – the winding and atmospheric Chapel Street, which meanders down to the sea. The street is now lined with independent boutiques, antique shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs, all occupying centuries-old properties. Venture a few doors up to the one-time smugglers’ haunt, The Turk’s Head pub, one of the oldest pubs in Cornwall. Penzance looks out towards Mounts Bay and St Michael’s Mount, proudly perched on its rocky outcrop. Kingsand and Cawsand go hand in hand and are located in the south east corner of Cornwall. Each are pretty coastal villages and both have lovely sandy beaches. Whitsand Bay also has a sandy beach and this one is over three miles long, ideal for a romantic stroll listening to the waves.
This area of Devon and Cornwall is ideal for water sports such as paddleboarding and kayaking and keen golfers can practice their swing at Portwrinkle golf course.
The Torpoint ferry is 15 minutes’ drive, where you can sail cross the River Tamar into the city of Plymouth and visit ’Drake’s Hoe’ or the Barbican where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America. The Little House is just yards from the ‘Mineral Tramways Trail’, one of Cornwall’s many cycle networks that links the north coast at Portreath to the South coast near Falmouth. It is popular with walkers, cyclists, horse riders and sightseers as it passes through a rich mining heritage area, dotted with old mine archaeology. A cycle hire centre, shop and café are approximately 1 mile from the front door, right on the trail itself. The world famous Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Lizard Peninsula, which is the location of Lizard Point and the most southerly point of the country, are all easily accessible from the property. The ancient seafaring town of Falmouth is approx 6 miles away, and provides an excellent centre for many activities such as sailing, windsurfing, pleasure trips and diving. Other amenities available locally are fine sandy beaches, shopping, cinema, restaurants and Pendennis Castle, perched high on Pendennis Point. Falmouth is also home to the National Maritime Museum, two yacht marinas and numerous National Trust gardens. A ferry to the Roseland Peninsula and a sightseeing trip along the River Fal to Truro are also available from one of the town quays.
