Portreath is a seaside village on the beautiful North Cornish coast. There are spectacular coastal walks and amazing sunsets. Within a short flat walk to the heart of the village where you will find shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. Ilogan Woods, adjacent to Portreath, with streams and a circular walk leading to the 14th-century church tower at Ilogan.
The Mineral Tramway Cycle Trail starts at Portreath and continues for 11 miles through the beautiful Cornish countryside to Devoran on the south coast. Cycles can be hired close by. Portreath is a perfect location for touring Cornwall, just 3 miles from the main A30 providing easy access to Penzance, St Ives, Lands End, Falmouth and The Lizard Peninsula. There are miles of coastal paths to explore and great road links ensuring guests can visit both the north and south coasts with ease. The area attracts walkers and cyclists with the Coast to Coast trail, which follows the path of an old tramway from Deveron on the south coast to Portreath on the north coast. Bike hire is available locally.
The family friendly beach at Portreath has a wide expanse of sand and a small harbour area. There are good local shops, a bakery, two pubs and choice of take away. Head slightly south to Gwithian and the famous lighthouse at Godrevy sits proudly on its rocky outcrop. The area attracts seals, dolphins, basking sharks and is a great spot for bird watchers, with the wide estuary at Hayle and marshes at nearby Marazion. Take the scenic coastal train from St Erth into St Ives, home of the Tate St Ives and Barbara Hepworth Museum. Here you will find a great choice of restaurants, bars, cafés and art galleries. This large property is ideal for extended families and friends who are looking for a base to explore this beautiful area. Upstairs are two double bedrooms with doors that lead out onto a conservatory, ideal for morning coffee or just enjoying peace and quiet. This looks over the enclosed garden, which is on two levels and all laid with chippings. On the ground floor is a large kitchen/dining room ideal for entertaining. Friends and family can sit around the table, which was originally a pasty making table. The living room is charming with a wood burner nestled into the feature granite fireplace, ideal on a cold winter’s evening where you can curl up with a hot drink and a good book, or watch one of your favourite programs on the large TV. There is a large lawned field in front of the parking area, with football goals ideal for a game, or just running around. The on-site laundry has two large washing machines and a microwave, shared between Barn Owl and and an additional one bedroomed cottage.
There is so much to do in the area including remnants of the copper mining industry that made Redruth one of the richest mining areas in Cornwall. If you go into Redruth town, just over two miles away, you will see the old clock tower, historic buildings and various statues celebrating the history of the area. The Great Flat Lode is within walking distance from the property and is ideal for walking and cycling. It follows part of the Basset Mine Tramway, which is approximately 6 miles long, where you will see some of the finest remains of engine houses and other structures as you wander around. The imposing Carn Brea rests at the top and if you climb up you will be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views, including parts of South Croft Mine which was the last Cornish mine to close.
If you are looking for beaches, Portreath is the closest just over 5 miles away, or Porthowan beach just over 6 miles away. If you want to go a little further then a visit to the pretty village of St Agnes with its beach and coastal walks is under 10 miles away.
