The Lost Gardens of Heligan is absolutely worth a visit, and is set in 200 acres of garden history that were once lost under brambles, they have been lovingly restored to their former glory. St Austell’s port is the lovely Charlestown Harbour, which has been used as a location for the TV show Poldark, as well as many films and TV shows too. After a busy day, perhaps sample a Cornish Real Ale from one of the many bars and restaurants in the area. Within easy reach from St Austell are the old fishing ports of Fowey and Mevagissey. Boat trips to Mevagissey are available in the summer season where you can explore the working harbour and narrow cobbled streets. Should you wish to venture further afield, Cornwall’s capital, Truro, has an impressive cathedral and many things to do for all ages. Padstow, St Ives, Looe, Polperro and Port Isaac are all within easy reach by car.
