St Mawgan is an ideal base to explore the surrounding area. Newquay, famous for its sandy beaches, water sports and bustling town, is only a 15-minute drive away. Rick Stein’s sea food restaurant is also within easy reach, located in Padstow a mere 15-minute drive away.

There really is so much on offer in the area from golf courses, cliff top walks and rock pools to visiting Newquay Zoo and the Eden Project. Of course, you can choose to do as much or as little as possible, safe in the knowledge that at the end of the day you can relax in comfort at Barn Cottage.

This property welcomes families. It provides children’s cutlery, a travel cot, highchair, a stairgate, baby step and bunk beds. For bookings during the festive season, a Christmas tree, decorations, lights and a welcome pack containing local mulled apple juice, festive chocolate and mince pies is provided. Guests are treated on arrival to a wonderful welcome pack full of local Cornish produce including apple juice, chocolate and biscuits.

Padstow has an array of shops, pubs and restaurants, including Rick Stein’s fish restaurant. You are close to the Camel Trail, where you can walk or cycle along a disused railway track by the Camel Estuary, taking in the bird life, to Wadebridge and beyond to Bodmin. Just a short drive away are the many sandy beaches of the north coast, including Watergate Bay, the home of extreme watersports. Visit the famous surfing beaches of Newquay, as well as a zoo and the Blue Reef Aquarium. Horse riding and golf nearby. Beach 2½ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

The picturesque village of Charlestown with shops, restaurants and bars is a short stroll away, but what it’s famous for is its harbour and tall ships. One visit to this area of South Cornwall won’t be enough.

Newhaven is a beautifully presented, dog friendly, bungalow with a terraced garden, and a large deck and is ideal for a family with young children, the twin bedroom is pirate themed and there are a wealth of novel garden ornaments including a lobster pot and "smugglers den," a child’s playhouse. The dining conservatory creates an al fresco ambience of dining under the stars but remains cosy with underfloor heating, and winter evenings will be toasty warm in the dual aspect kitchen/living room with the lovely slate fireplace surrounding the wood burner.
Trebarwith Strand Beach is close by and at low tide a large expanse of golden sand is exposed, with plenty of rock pools and a number of caves, just be careful to always check the tide times. Tintagel is well worth a visit, cross the new suspension bridge to Tintagel Castle and Island where medieval fortifications combine a history of the dark ages with the legend of King Arthur to produce a wonderful day out with many different eateries and pubs to sample as a bonus. The coast path stretches along some of the most rugged cliffs in the southwest, where majestic promontories overlook secluded beaches with golden sands and crashing Atlantic surf. A quick drive will also take you to Boscastle, site of the infamous floods in 2004, or the traditional fishing village of Port Isaac where lovely narrow lanes lead to the charming harbour and beach that Port Isaac is so famous for. Standing on the headland above the picturesque village of Port Gaverne, the house is a few steps from the north Cornwall coastal path. The beach at Port Gaverne is a 6-7 minute walk away and a little further is Port Isaac, with its huddle of slate houses and narrow alleyways.
The state-of-the-art kitchen is great for catering and cooking the fresh local produce. There are two excellent fish shops in Port Isaac that sell their daily catch of fish and shellfish; specialities are crab and lobster.
Local lamb, beef and pork are all available at the nearby farm shop, which has wonderful views overlooking the sea.
Famous now as the setting for the TV series ’Doc Martin’, Port Isaac is a working fishing village with shops, bars and several top-quality restaurants.
This area is now renowned as a ’foodie paradise’, with several celebrity chefs located here and the area is very well served by a whole variety of dining places to fit every pocket.
Close by is a hotel and next door is a bistro, which has indoor and outdoor dining. There are two Michelin starred restaurants in Port Isaac run by Nathan Outlaw. Nearby in Padstow is Paul Ainsworth’s Michelin starred restaurant and he has a great pub too. Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant and Cookery School are in Padstow. Rick Stein also has a number of other restaurants with varying price ranges.
This is an ideal spot for those who enjoy coastal walks, bird watching, golf, fishing, surfing, sailing, kayaking, cycling or just lazing on the beach. Polzeath’s famous surf attracts all comers, and its glorious sandy beach is just a short drive away. The cliffs, caves and rock pools are a children’s paradise.

Wadebridge hosts one end of the Camel Trail, with a 5-mile dedicated cycle ride to Padstow on the old railway track, alongside the picturesque Camel Estuary. To the north stands Tintagel’s medieval castle and the quaint fishing village of Boscastle, with Crackington Haven and Bude a little further on. Inland lies Jamaica Inn and Bodmin Moor, the setting for the ’Poldark’ stories.
A few minutes’ walk away is a water sports centre, Cornish Rock Tors, based on the beach at Port Gaverne. They offer kayaking, paddle boarding and coasteering for individuals and groups. Polzeath’s famous surf attracts all comers, and its glorious sandy beach is just a short drive away. Water sports can be enjoyed at Rock, from where a passenger ferry crosses the Camel Estuary to the town of Padstow. Daymer Bay has another glorious sandy beach, and the golf course at St Enodoc is open to the public. John Betjeman, the late Poet Laureate, is buried at St Enodoc Church, with its twisted spire.

These two stone built holiday cottages (ref 29227 and ref TJU) date back to the 17 century and enjoy a rural location with superb sea views. Pet-friendly Downhouse Cottage was extended in Victorian times, while Downhouse has a rustic feel with a clome oven in the fireplace and a large garden. Water is supplied from a borehole; the water is wonderful and is tested annually, so no need for bottled water.

Turnpike Cottage is a spacious, beautifully presented cottage with a wonderful, large, double aspect kitchen/dining area, three bedrooms, two reception rooms, and three bath/shower rooms. Outside is a sun terrace and on the other side of the quiet country road is a games room with table football and a small table tennis table, off street parking and a small private garden with seating area. The cottage is set in the delightful location of Gerrans Square, opposite the Royal Standard pub and Gerrans Church.
Turnpike Cottage is only a short, 5-minute walk down the hill to the pretty little harbour of Portscatho, where many artists have taken inspiration from the stunning location and superb light in the area. There are a number of delightful little galleries showcasing the work of various Cornish artists. The local public house is nestled in The Square and serves local ales and good pub grub all year round. Rosevine beach is dog friendly throughout the year and is just to the east of the village. It has beautiful golden sands and is over looked by the increasingly famous Hidden Hut. Enjoying uninterrupted views of the award-winning Mawgan Porth beach, this fantastic beach house is surrounded by a third of an acre of beautifully kept gardens with a large, sea facing, sun trap decking area, overlooking gently sloping lawns and a pretty stream that trickles down to the sea below. Over the past year (2022), the house has been renovated to the highest standards by one of the country’s leading interior designers and offers plenty of living space all benefitting from exceptional sea views and floor to ceiling sliding doors leading to a large decking area. The large circular fireplace makes for cosy evenings during the Autumn and Winter months. The brand-new handmade kitchen is well supplied with all creature comforts from a juicer to a selection of coffee machines, including a Nespresso. A door leads into a separate TV room with a big corner sofa, both with fabulous sea views and door to the terrace. Three ground floor bedrooms, ome with chandelier, two with those stunning views. A beautiful glass and oak staircase leads from the entrance hall up to the first floor where you will find three more bedrooms; a double bedroom with en-suite shower room; a large twin bedroom with large en-suite shower room, and one with a TV and sofa bed which enjoys the best views of all.

The beach is just a 5-minute walk away from the garden gate. Off the drive, there is a lawned area and to the side of the house a heated outdoor shower for when you return from the beach. The equipment store has a range of children’s wetsuits and storage for boards. Once cleaned off, you can luxuriate in the state-of-the-art Aspen and Spruce spa with a sauna, experiential shower plus cold water bucket for the brave.
