Rye is steeped in history and is well worth exploring, with a range of restaurants, bars, boutique shops and historical sites. Wander through the historic Landgate and along the cobbled streets to admire the House with Two Doors (filmed as part of the BBC Series ‘Mapp and Lucia’ and the infamous Mermaid Street). Take lunch at one of the lovely pubs serving food, followed by a visit to Rye Pottery for a creative afternoon. The glorious long sandy beaches and dunes of Camber Sands are also just 5 miles up the road. For wine enthusiasts, Chapel Down and Gusbourne Vineyards are well worth a visit where local wine can be sampled or enjoyed within the restaurant. Further afield are the interesting historic towns of Hastings and Battle. The Old Town in Hastings is a popular historic area with numerous traditional pubs with a vibrant music scene. A busy day of exploration can be rounded off with fish and chips on the seafront. Beach 2 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 50 yards.

This stunning 3 bedroom barn is ideally located just outside of Rye and yet its rural location puts you firmly in the middle of the English countryside with far reaching panoramic views. You’ll see more deer and wildlife than people, but trust the peace and quiet will suit. The sunrises are spectacular and for those looking for a rural adventure your journey starts here. It’s a great base to explore from with several National Trust properties nearby, as well as some of the best vineyards in the south east of England, including Chapel Down and Gusbourne.
Tillingham Vineyard is at the end of the road, a great location with wine, a restaurant, pizza and beer, and The Three Legs micro brewery is 10 minutes’ drive in the other direction offering great beer, hams and cheeses usually between Thursday and Sunday. The Globe in Marsh at the Rye end of the Old Military Canal is a quirky pub with good food. The Hoof, The Standard and Webbe’s Fish Cafe are also good places to eat.
Rye itself is worth a wander with cobbled streets, old shops and cafes, and its own cinema. Tenterden is also worth a visit with the Kent and East Sussex Railway station, micro breweries, shops and cafes.
If you simply want to relax and go for a walk, Partridge Barn is immediately next to Beckley Woods where you can easily walk for an hour without seeing a soul. Camber Sands offers one of the longest sandy beaches in the south and is 20 minutes’ drive from the house. Northiam has a great little cafe next to the river where you can hire canoes, boats or paddle boards. If you’re feeling energetic you can paddle as far as Bodiam Castle. Whether you paddle back is a different matter! Great Dixter House and Gardens is also in the village.
Ashford Outlet Centre is 35 minutes drive and Folkestone Eurotunnel terminal 45 mins away. The local village of Peasmarsh has a hotel with swimming, spa and gym with day membership as well as a supermarket and petrol station for all your needs.

The pretty village of Robertsbridge is just a mile away and offers a general store, local pub, and award-winning Indian restaurant. Both the local pubs are also dog friendly and the Salehurst Halt has a large dog-friendly garden. Bewl Water is 7 miles away and offers various water sports and the Bodiam Boating Station is 10 miles away which offers river cruises and boat hire for a more relaxed day out or kayaking for the more adventurous. You can also explore Bodiam Castle 3 miles away and a little further afield are Battle, the Cinque Ports town of Rye and the coastal town of Hastings. The area between Robertsbridge, Rye and Pevensey is called ‘1066 Country’ and boasts a host of tourist and leisure attractions, including Great Dixter, Bodiam Castle and Smallhythe Place. For those wanting to venture back to the time of steam trains, visit the Kent and East Sussex Railway and take a trip from Bodiam to Tenterden in one of the lovely old carriages. Visit the moated castle at Bodiam built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, only a 10-minute drive.

This area in the rolling countryside of the High Weald offers no shortage of local attractions or places of interest to visit all practically on the doorstep or within a short drive. Nearby the Ashdown Forest covers 14,000 acres of lowland heathland that has never been cultivated and offers extensive opportunities for walking. It was famously Henry VIII’s hunting ground, but is also a must for all Winnie the Pooh fans. The adjacent village of Hartfield was home to AA Milne. Throughout the whole Wealden and Ashdown areas there are ample public footpaths and cycle routes to explore and an exhaustive supply of excellent country pubs to visit. Take a trip on the Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway from Tenterden, also known as ’The Jewel of the Weald’, through the Rother Levels to Bodiam, one of the most evocative moated castles (National Trust), built in 1385. Discover the one time coastal smuggling town of Hastings and medieval Cinque Port town of Rye with its cobbled streets. Picturesque sand dunes and interesting wildlife can be explored at Camber. Mount House Barn is a tastefully renovated 17th-century barn ideally located in the pretty village of Burwash, surrounding the property with wonderful views. The property boasts a wood burner in the living room to cosy up in front of in the colder months. The garden outside is a show stopper, as it is surrounded by luscious greenery from the surrounding fields; why not sit outside with your morning coffee and take in the fresh air around you, or dine al fresco in the evening with a hearty meal, watching the stars above you.
The property is surrounded by things to do for all the members of the family. Close by is the All Things Dog Park which allows your four-legged friend to explore and play while still being in the safety of the enclosed field. The park is open for 12 hours a day, all week allowing you to go and play any time of the day.
A short 15-minute drive away is the High Weald AONB which is filled with things to do. There are endless footpaths to take, each one producing its stunning scenery, or hike up some of the hills and get some breathtaking views below you, creating perfect photo opportunities. If cycling is more your thing, there are several cycle trails you can take, weiving you around the area into the most stunning locations.
Bodium Castle is also within a 15-minute drive and is filled with a plethora of different things to do. Interactive activities are held frequently for children to join in and get a taste of what it was like to live in Medieval times, joining quests and designing maps making this a memorable adventure for all. Other nearby areas include Eastbourne, Battle and Rye, all of which have adventures of their own.

Built to a good standard, these adjoining holiday cottages in the owners’ grounds are situated in the tiny village of Beddingham, which lies in the South Downs just off the Lewes to Eastbourne road (which although convenient, can be busy). The view to one side of the cottage is that of Mount Caburn, which is one of the highest landmarks in East Sussex and is the home of an Iron Age fort! Both cottages have wheelchair access to the ground floor rooms. Lewes, 2½ miles, is dominated by the ruins of a great Norman castle and boasts twisting medieval streets and tiny twittens. The port of Newhaven lies on the land with the shortest sea route between London and Paris and Seaford is a quiet, informal holiday resort from where Seaford Head, The Seven Sisters Country Park, Beachy Head and the village of Alfriston can all be visited. Glyndebourne and the outdoor opera, 2 miles. Drusillas Zoo Park, Charleston - the home of the artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant and rural bolt hole for the Bloomsbury group, Firle Place and Newhaven Fort are all a short drive. Eastbourne, 12 miles, Brighton 10 miles. Shop 1½ miles, pub 1 mile.
