Swindon’s famous railway museum and outlet shopping are 20 miles.

This spacious semi-detached holiday cottage is attached to the farmhouse on a small holding and livery yard on the edge of the village of Pottern. It is situated on a peaceful bridleway with a private patio. Behind the cottage is a ¼ acre playing and seating area with glorious views towards Salisbury Plain. Visit Stonehenge, Avebury and the lovely National Trust village of Lacock, all only 20 minutes away or Longleat, Bath and Salisbury within ½ an hour. The New Forest, The Cotswolds and Glastonbury are approx 1 hour’s drive. Village shop ¾ mile, post office and pub ½ mile.

This Grade II listed detached thatched cottage is situated in the churchyard overlooking St James Church and Avebury Manor, and is within a few minutes’ walk from the Neolithic Avebury Stone Circle. The cottage dates from at least 1724 and was built with a timber frame and wattle and daub construction. It has a thatched roof, original low beamed ceilings and is painted with lime wash throughout. The living room hosts a wood burner. The original property was extended at both ends and became two cottages, and in the 1970s the current owner reverted it back to one larger cottage. It is set away from the High Street in a very quiet position, with a private garden where you can relax and enjoy the ambience of this mystical village (please note the garden may not be completely dog proof).
The UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Trust village of Avebury has a manor house and gardens to explore along an archeology museum detailing the history of the stone circle and surrounding area. There are several walks from Avebury including well-marked footpaths to Silbury Hill, Windmill Hill, West Kennet Long Barrow and the Ridgeway. The White Horse Trail also passes through the village, as does the National Cycle Network route 403.
The historic market town of Devizes is a 15 minute drive away with the Kennet and Avon Canal and Caen Hill flight of locks to visit and you can also take in a tour of the Wadsworth Brewery. Beautiful Marlborough is also a 15 minute drive away, with interesting shops to visit on the wide High Street. Savernake Forest is a further 5 minutes drive from Marlborough, dating back to pre-Tudor times there are 4,500 acres of woods to explore.
Further afield there is the city of Bath to visit along with the Roman Baths and the American Museum. For more ancient monuments, Stonehenge and museum is not to be missed. Other National Trust sites nearby are the gardens at Stourhead, the house and deer park of Dyrham and the historic Abbey and village of Lacock, home of the birthplace of photography and the setting for many films, including Harry Potter. The pub and community shop are a 5 minute walk away and the nearest supermarkets are in Marlborough and Devizes.

The impressive Neolithic stones of Stonehenge are a short drive away as is the stunning Cathedral City of Salisbury and is well worth a visit with a fabulous selection of independent shops, pubs and eateries and of course the impressive cathedral. For the perfect family trip Longleat House and Safari Park is just half an hour’s drive away and is certain to impress guests of all ages. A little further afield, the stunning city of Bath famous for its Spa and majestic Royal Crescent is well worth a trip. Set in an idyllic location, Mortimer Cottage is a 17th-century, Grade II listed, thatched cottage. It lies in the centre of the picturesque village of Wootton Rivers, just 5 miles from the delightful market town of Marlborough. Since the property was originally two cottages, there are two steep staircases which lead to the first floor, accessed via the dining room and living room. On the ground floor, this detached cottage has a spacious open plan kitchen/dining area with breakfast bar, a living room with wood burner for the winter evenings, a utility area and shower room. The first floor, with low ceilings, has a master bedroom with kingsize bed, an adjoining room featuring a day bed, and a second bedroom with twin beds. The period-style bathroom, featuring a luxurious, roll-top bath and twin basins, is in the middle of the first floor at the top of the stairs. Outside is a private courtyard garden with comfortable seating and driveway parking for two small cars or one large car.

Wootton Rivers is a sought-after village with a thatched pub just opposite Mortimer Cottage, and the village also offers extensive footpaths and opportunities for cyclists and walkers. With the Kennet and Avon canal being a short walk away as well as many other countryside walks. Avebury is 5 miles away, as is the centre of Marlborough with its range of great restaurants and pubs, along with a variety of high quality and independent shops offering a unique blend of modern attractions and facilities. The high street is one of the widest in the UK and offers a twice-weekly market on a Wednesday and Saturday. The M4 is within easy reach, Hungerford is 12½ miles east and there is a regular train service from Pewsey to Paddington in just 65 minutes; a car is essential when visiting Mortimer Cottage, which is the perfect base from which to explore all that Wiltshire and The Cotswolds have to offer.

You will enter the property into the lovely living/dining room, there is an impressive inglenook fireplace with a feature wood burner, not to be used, a Smart TV and the dining area has French doors that lead into the south facing garden. The kitchen is fully equipped with a Rayburn Aga for cooking, and there is a good range of appliances, perfect for cooking up a home cooked meal after a busy day exploring. Next to the kitchen is the utility room with stable door leading to the garden and a downstairs bathroom with shower.
As the property was originally two cottages there are two staircases, the stairs are steep and there are low ceilings. The staircase from the living/dining room leads to the spacious landing with master bedroom and family bathroom, whilst the second staircase leads to a single bedroom and another large room with kingsize bed, and a small opening passage to the master bedroom.
