One of the bedrooms is found on the ground floor, the ideal option for the less mobile. The large living room offers a generous space and comfort, with a cosy wood burner, large TV and French doors leading out onto the enclosed garden and patio. There is also a spacious open plan kitchen/dining room with French doors also leading out into the garden. There is comfortable space for eight to live and dine together, whilst offering privacy and freedom for everybody in each bedroom.
Situated inbetween Windermere and Bowness, you are just a short walk from either, ideal for enjoying the local shops and eateries or to experience a trip out on Lake Windermere. - Anstruther, ScotlandThe Old Smithy is a truly unique, traditional, stone built terraced cottage right in the heart of the picturesque coastal town of Anstruther. It has been completely renovated into a welcoming holiday home, yet maintains the traditional character of the building and has incorporated modern and contemporary living style. Guests will find a spacious open plan living area with cosy sofas where you can relax and unwind, and a contemporary kitchen area fitted with good quality appliances and everything you will need to prepare a family meal. There are two double bedrooms on the first floor which overlook the living space and have sliding oak doors for privacy. There is also a shower room with a walk-in shower.
The harbour and port of Anstruther has a long and interesting history linked to The Old Smithy, and part of the building was built before 1730 and over time has been a stable, smithy and harbour store. It is located on Wightmans Wynd, which was named after Charles Wightman, a wealthy merchant and smuggler in the 1700’s and also a Jacobite sympathiser. He provided sanctuary for survivors from Culloden in the cellars adjacent to The Old Smithy. The building fell into disrepair, but in 2009 and due to its unique location and as a listed building, an architect took on the challenge of redesigning the cottage and won the Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage in 2013.
With a sandy beach and most amenities just a minute from the door, this is a perfect location for a couple(s), friends or a small family who are looking to enjoy a seaside holiday or a walking, golfing or sightseeing break. Anstruther has much to do and many eateries to suit all tastes, from award-winning fish and chip shops to a Michelin star restaurant, as well as lots of cafés, traditional inns, ice cream shops, bakeries, gift shops and galleries. The working harbour has fishing boats as well as leisure crafts, including seasonal boat trips to the Isle of May (a national nature reserve). The old lanes and streets are interesting to explore on foot.
Follow the Fife Coastal Path that literally passes the front door and leads in either direction to secluded coves, little fishing villages and white sandy beaches. For exploring further afield, St Andrews is only 9 miles away and makes a great day out with excellent shopping facilities as well as lots of restaurants, pubs and bistros. Famous for being the home of golf, lovers of the sport will enjoy visiting the British Golf Museum or playing on one of the championship courses. In fact there are over 40 golf courses in Fife to choose from. The local area is home to some outstanding summer food and arts festivals as well as an annual lifeboat gala which provides great entertainment for all ages. There are many more interesting heritage and historic buildings in the vicinity, and a visit to The Scottish Fisheries Museum just along the harbour is well worth a visit. Take lunch at one of the lovely pubs serving food, followed by a visit to Rye Pottery for a creative afternoon. The glorious long sandy beaches and dunes of Camber Sands are also just 5 miles up the road. For wine enthusiasts, Chapel Down and Gusbourne Vineyards are well worth a visit where local wine can be sampled or enjoyed within the restaurant. Closer to home, is the smugglers coves of Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes, where pretty cottages cling to cliffs and time appears to have stood still. - Rye, EnglandThis stunning 3 bedroom barn is ideally located just outside of Rye and yet its rural location puts you firmly in the middle of the English countryside with far reaching panoramic views. You’ll see more deer and wildlife than people, but trust the peace and quiet will suit. The sunrises are spectacular and for those looking for a rural adventure your journey starts here. It’s a great base to explore from with several National Trust properties nearby, as well as some of the best vineyards in the south east of England, including Chapel Down and Gusbourne.
Tillingham Vineyard is at the end of the road, a great location with wine, a restaurant, pizza and beer, and The Three Legs micro brewery is 10 minutes’ drive in the other direction offering great beer, hams and cheeses usually between Thursday and Sunday. The Globe in Marsh at the Rye end of the Old Military Canal is a quirky pub with good food. The Hoof, The Standard and Webbe’s Fish Cafe are also good places to eat.
Rye itself is worth a wander with cobbled streets, old shops and cafes, and its own cinema. Tenterden is also worth a visit with the Kent and East Sussex Railway station, micro breweries, shops and cafes.
If you simply want to relax and go for a walk, Partridge Barn is immediately next to Beckley Woods where you can easily walk for an hour without seeing a soul. Camber Sands offers one of the longest sandy beaches in the south and is 20 minutes’ drive from the house. Northiam has a great little cafe next to the river where you can hire canoes, boats or paddle boards. If you’re feeling energetic you can paddle as far as Bodiam Castle. Whether you paddle back is a different matter! Great Dixter House and Gardens is also in the village.
Ashford Outlet Centre is 35 minutes drive and Folkestone Eurotunnel terminal 45 mins away. The local village of Peasmarsh has a hotel with swimming, spa and gym with day membership as well as a supermarket and petrol station for all your needs.
