Birkerthwaite Farmhouse (W43001) is a unique holiday property dating back to 1627 and has many original features, beamed ceilings, flagged floors and unusual oak wall cupboards built in the 1700’s. Barton Hall Farm can be found just outside Pooley Bridge, the village at the outfall of Lake Ullswater. Set in the countryside on a traditional working farm, this area offers some of the most wonderful landscapes in the region from the privacy of a secluded rural setting. It is minutes from Lake Ullswater, with its walking, water sports and ponderous steamers making their regal-like journeys up and down the lake in the shadow of the majestic fells. This area offers many forms of recreation, whatever season you choose to visit. All three cottages have been tastefully converted from original old stone farm buildings; and wherever possible the original features have been retained. Old pitch pine beams stretch unhindered through bedrooms and across stairways and the local slate and sandstone are in evidence throughout. Guests are welcomed with fresh flowers, along with well furnished comfortable holiday accommodation, wood-burning stoves and well-equipped kitchens. This charming holiday cottage is situated on a quiet corner in the heart of the ancient market town of Ulverston. It offers quick and easy access to the many delights of Ulverston, home to the start of the Cumbria Way, with its old pubs, excellent restaurants and the twice-weekly market which is not to be missed. The Lake District National Park, Eskdale Railway, the World of Beatrix Potter and the Furness Coast are all within easy reach, as well as Lake Windermere and Lake Coniston which are 12 miles away. Ulverston has a wide range of shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs, a cinema and a leisure centre. Today it’s well known as a festival town with events throughout the year, including walking and art festivals in the summer months and the renowned Dickensian festival in late November. One of the town’s great claims to fame is as the birthplace of Stan Laurel. Whilst many Lakeland destinations have been developed beyond recognition, Ulverston still has an authentic feel and community spirit. All of the attractions of the National Park are easily reached. Bardsea and Askam beach are nearby, as is Dalton Zoo and the Dock Museum in Barrow. The Furness Coast boasts sandy beaches and good bird watching. Wood Close has 3 acres of grounds, comprising of woodland, gardens, a panoramic terrace and sitting out area, all of which can be used by our guests, and which are also shared with the other apartments in the house. From the terrace, there are dramatic views of Grasmere lake and Loughrigg Fell. There is a small, unfenced pond and stream in the grounds, which is home to red squirrels and many species of birds, and where wild deer are also occasional visitors. Each apartment has its own allocated parking space, with private parking for 1 car specifically for visitors to The Old Coach House.

This homely holiday apartment retains all of its traditional charm for a peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable holiday in the heart of the Lake District. It is an excellent base for walking, with easy access to the fells, Alcock Tarn, and the famous ‘Coffin Route’ directly from the garden. There is a gentle downhill walk to Grasmere village (passing William Wordsworth’s home at Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Grasmere centre on the way), and from there are easy routes to both the lower and upper slopes of the village’s surrounding fells. In the village, you will find an attractive selection of bars and restaurants, and a wide variety of shops, including a small supermarket, post office, newsagent, chemist, baker, outdoor equipment retailers, gift and art shops, a garden centre and the famous Grasmere gingerbread shop. The graves of the poet William Wordsworth and his family are situated in St. Oswald’s parish churchyard.
