Curlew Cottage is ideally located between Allonby and Silloth on the Cumbrian west coast, with exceptional views onto the Irish Sea and further to the Scottish coastline. Surrounded by the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty you have some of the finest sand dunes in the area. This area is also part of a site of specific scientific interest as the neighbouring dunes are home to rare animals like the natterjack toad. The surrounding dune grasslands and beach are also very important for birds like Curlews, Oystercatchers, stonechat and many more for breeding and roosting, making this area perfect for nature and bird watchers alike. If your lucky you could even stumble across the submerged forest, dating back over 8000yrs, it is thought to be pine or oak which has been hidden off the coast by the sea.

The cottage itself is very traditional for the area, with many features to show off. Allithwaite is a short drive from both Grange-Over-Sands and Cartmel and is only about 7 miles from the southern tip of Lake Windermere with easy access to the higher fells. The local pub is a short walk away, where a warm welcome is guaranteed and delicious food is always on offer. Grange-Over-Sands and surrounding districts offer an interesting selection of historic seaside resorts and quaint rural villages. Grange is an elegant town with a long, sweeping promenade fronting the bay, lined with antique and collector’s shops and cafés. Cartmel, famous for its priory and race meetings, is well worth a visit, if only to sample the local sticky toffee pudding. For family fun, take a ride on The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway which connects directly to The Windermere Lake Cruises at Lakeside, opening a delightful sailing trip to Ambleside and Bowness-on Windermere on England’s longest lake.

Being not too far from the A6, the rest of the Lake District including Bowness and Windermere are a mere 30 minutes’ drive away and the Yorkshire Dales, with the popular market town of Kirkby Lonsdale and the Water Fall Trail at Ingleton, is equidistant. Morecambe and Lancaster can also be reached within 30 minutes.
You are welcome to bring your dog. If your dog enjoys relaxing on a sofa, the owners ask that you provide your own dog blankets to place on the sofas to protect them. They would also ask that at the end of a muddy walk, you clean your dog (towels are provided) in the porch area before allowing the dog into the rest of the property.

You immediately feel welcome as your step through the front door of this beautiful cottage, Off the entrance hall there is the living room with comfy sofas and welcoming open fire place , the ideal space to warm those toes after a busy day’s walking. Silecroft is a quiet peaceful idyllic village with a lovely pub; shops and supermarkets are available at Millom which is around 4 miles away. Haverigg is three miles which has a water ski centre and bar, further along from here is RSPB Nature reserve at Hodbarrow for spotting breeding terns, ringed plovers, redshanks and oystercatchers. If you enjoy beach walks there is fabulous safe sandy beach within ½ mile from the cottage, a beautiful place to watch the stunning sunsets. Silecroft also offers a splendid well maintained 9 hole links golf course with super views of the beach and Black Combe, they also offer Foot golf, visitors are always welcome to enjoy this coastal golf course. Other local attractions include Mullthwaite Green riding centre at the top of the road for hacks,beach rides or lessons. If you fancy a larger horse perhaps try the empowering Cumbrian Heavy Horses, where you can trek over the hills on one of those large, magnificent creatures or again a beach ride on Silecroft beach. Alternatively for a gentler pace -how about a leisurely walk up Black Combe to capture the spectacular views of the western Lakes coastline aswell as on a good day IOM, Wales and Scotland.
A 22 minute drive finds you at Waste Water with its impressive screes or in the other direction 30-minute drive finds you at the impressive Coniston Water or a little further on and you are at the water’s edge of Lake Windermere. If you fancy a steam train ride why not try the local "Ratty" in the stunning Eskdale valley which offers great local pubs which offer food and refreshment. A bit of History would be the impressive Muncaster Castle which entertains guests with mesmerizing "birds of prey" displays and gorgeous garden walks.
