    The Old Mill is light, warm and spacious, and has a wonderful private terrace facing south to the sun overlooking the river and garden - perfect for breakfast, drinks or a barbecue. Situated on the outskirts of the village of Great Strickland, it is just a stone’s throw from the Lake District National Park. To the west, a mile away, is Lowther Castle (featured on the Antiques Roadshow) and the beautiful villages of Askham, Pooley Bridge and Glenridding. Ullswater lake offers various attractions including a trip on the old steamer, sailing, paddle boarding, fishing and some of Wainwright’s favourite fell walks, including one of the big four, Helvellyn.
    For walkers to the east, there are more opportunities to explore in the Pennine hills and Yorkshire Dales National Park. There are peaceful country lanes for cycling and the Eden Valley Circular Cycle Route runs through Great Strickland. There are good opportunities nearby for horse riding, golf, sailing, canoeing, fishing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting.
    Penrith is a short drive away to the north and has excellent shopping choices with five supermarkets, as well as an excellent local produce delicatessen, many arts and crafts shops, a cinema and a variety of restaurants. Within walking distance are two village pubs The Lowther Castle Inn and The Strickland Arms serving good food and a Michelin Star restaurant, Allium nearby in Askham. The Old Mill offers a perfect, relaxing, holiday base in a beautiful valley in the centre of this amazing scenic area.

    A short distance from the pretty village of Askham, Crescent Cottage is ideally situated for exploring Ullswater, Keswick and enjoying the delights of the northern Lakes. Alternatively, the beautiful Eden Valley is on the doorstep for walks, breathtaking scenery and quaint villages offering Cumbrian hospitality at its finest, with the market town of Penrith just 4 miles away. Lowther model village was said to have been built in order to move the original village, and to improve the view from Lowther Castle. A visitor attraction in itself, the Lowther Estate offers guests a wealth of experiences, including Lowther Castle with its stunning Gothic profile, and the extensive gardens and picturesque grounds running down to the River Lowther. The flying club at Kirkland and the fishing lakes at Blencarn are close by. The Cumbrian towns of Appleby and Kirkby Stephen are again within easy reach and offer a good mix for all including historic buildings, good selection of cafés, pubs and restaurants, and plenty of independent retailers.

    Conn Cottage is situated in the attractive hamlet of Bampton, in the Lowther Valley. This is a tranquil, unspoilt and beautiful area of the Lake District. This amazing area is perfect for getting away from it all and for seeing wildlife like red squirrels, deer and buzzards. However, the location is still also convenient for accessing not only other parts of the Lake District, but also the Yorkshire Dales, Teesdale and Hadrian’s Wall. Bampton has a village store/post office with tearoom, children’s playground and there is a lovely pub a gentle stroll away in the neighbouring hamlet of Bampton Grange. There are other excellent pubs serving food a short drive away in Askham, Tirril and Shap, as well as the hotel at Haweswater.
    The nearest lakes are Haweswater and Ullswater. The area is perfect for walking and cycling with its quiet scenic roads and there is plenty of good walking from the doorstep, including on the surrounding fells leading over to Ullswater. Popular fells such as Hallin Fell and Place Fell and Mardale Head are nearby. There are lots of nearby attractions and activities including cycle hire, horse riding, Dalemain House and gardens, Aira Force, Ullswater Steamers and other water sports. The nearest town to Bampton is Penrith which is 7 miles away and the M6 is just a 10-minute drive for easy access.
