In John Peel country, Caldbeck is a pretty and peaceful village which has, in addition to cafés, craft and antique shops, a goldsmith, clogmaker and bowling green. Situated on the edge of the National Park, it is known locally as ’Back o’ Skiddaw’, a walk over which will bring you into the bustling market town of Keswick. Keswick with its lakes, Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water are a 15-minute drive and full of interesting things to see and do. Enjoy a ride up Derwent Water on the Keswick Launch, use the many walking and cycle paths to explore the breathtaking scenery, experience the theatre by the lake and the numerous museums suitable for all the family. The traditional market town of Cockermouth, Wordsworth’s birthplace, is 14 miles and the historic city of Carlisle and the Scottish border is 16 miles. Allonby Beach offers spectacular views across the Solway Firth to the mountains of southern Scotland, and is located just 5 miles from Maryport if you are looking for more restaurants, shopping and pubs.

If you want a more rugged adventure, you are only a 10-mile drive from the Lake District National Park, where you can tackle any one of the 214 Wainwright walks. It is just 16 miles to the nearest lake, Bassenthwaite, home to the Lake District Wildlife Park with over 100 species of animals, which makes for a great family day out.
