Featured as one of the doctor’s houses in the TV series ’Peak Practice’, this makes an excellent base for visiting all the Peak District has to offer, with Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall close at hand, as well as Crich Tram Village and Hardwick Hall. The renowned show caves at Castleton are an easy drive, whilst Carsington Water for fly fishing and watersports is within 15 miles. Chesterfield with its crooked church spire is just 6 miles. If you can tear yourself away from this idyllic base, a short walk will bring you to a local pub serving food, whilst the nearby town of Chesterfield offers a larger selection of pubs and good restaurants.

The historic market town of Chesterfield acts as the gateway to the Peak District, and has much to offer visitors. The town is famous for its 14th-century church with its crooked spire twisting curiously from its centre, while the town offers guests the opportunity to explore the market and many of the specialist shops dotted in and out of the shambles. The town also boasts Queens Park, with its lake, walks and summer bandstand, as well as a museum and theatre. Close by you will find the impressive Elizabethan Hardwick Hall, with its six grand towers elaborately monogramed with Bess of Hardwick’s initials, overlooking the superb gardens and walled courtyards of the grounds. Also popular with visitors is the semi-ruined 17th-century mansion of Bolsover Castle, set high on a wooded hilltop, looking west towards the heights of the Peak District.

Within easy reach you will discover attractions such as Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, Matlock and Bakewell, or the opera house at Buxton. Alternatively, the Peak District offers a magnitude of walks and cycling for those feeling active. Yew Tree Cottage is located in the quaint village of Holymoorside, one of the many hamlets in Chesterfield. It is home to two fantastic pubs, one of which is owned by Peak Ales meaning it has fantastic local beers on offer, and the second pub’s head chef featured on the Great British Menu and offers fantastic food options. There are ample walks directly from the door or a little further you can reach trails taking you to Linacre reservoir or into Matlock which is the next town on. The town is full of high street shops, great restaurants and there are many tourist attractions locally such as Chatsworth House which is only 6 miles away.
As you arrive at Yew Tree Cottage you are greeted by a fantastic garden with stunning views over the village and the countryside, enter the cottage into the spacious, social space the kitchen offers, with breakfast bar, dining table, sofa and skylight windows with an unspoilt view of the sky, there is a snug just off from here with comfortable sofa, TV and log burner. Johnnygate Grange is perfectly placed in the grounds of the wonderful Barlow Woodseats Hall which dates to the Norman conquest and was rebuilt in 1624. The house was the first marital home of Bess of Hardwick who later went on to build Hardwick Hall and Chatsworth House, both of which are nearby and a must to visit. It now offers guests five characterful en-suite bedrooms, an attractive sitting room with original features and a spacious open plan kitchen and dining area, perfect for family and friends to gather in and enjoy.
Take time to explore the local surroundings, where you will find places to eat ranging from pub food to fine dining.
