Take a beautiful Peak District National Park setting, just 3½ miles from Bakewell, add a historic hall (first recorded in the Domesday Book), and an ancient cluster of listed buildings converted to form superb holiday cottage accommodation, and the result is the captivating blend that is Harthill Hall.

Nestling in 14 acres of grounds on an upland called Priest’s Hill with excellent walking available from the doorstep, the properties have the use of an extensive range of leisure facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, solarium and treatment rooms. Noble names have woven the threads of the hall’s long history including Henry de Ferrers, the Cokaynes and the Harthills. Henry VIII is also believed to have stayed at the hall.

It was here in 1259 that Sir Richard de Hartle was issued a Papal Bull by Pope Alexander II, allowing him to appoint his own chaplain. The chapel ceased its functions as a place of worship in 1546 and now takes the form of The Chapel and Hartle Cottage. The eight cottages are furnished with antiques and surround a medieval cobbled courtyard. They all retain a wealth of original features including thick stone walls, large oak beams, mullion windows and flagstone floors. Derbyshire’s bustling market towns, villages, hills, dales and rivers offer majestic scenery, and a rich variety of customs. The beautiful market town of Bakewell (3½ miles) is situated on the River Wye, crossed by a 13th-century five-arched bridge which has coffee shops and restaurants. Within easy reach are Matlock, Hall Leys Park, Chesterfield, Alfreton and Buxton. National Trust properties and gardens nearby include Riley Graves, Longshaw, Mam Tor, South Peak, Dovedale, Hardwick Hall and Kedleston Hall. Close by are both Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall. On this floor you will find a great family room with bunk bed and a single bed, ideal for children.

Outside is a private patio with seating and hot tub, where you and your loved one can soak up the sun whilst admiring the surroundings. If you can tear yourself away from this idyllic base, a short walk will bring you to a local pub serving food, whilst the nearby town of Chesterfield offers a larger selection of pubs and good restaurants.

The historic market town of Chesterfield acts as the gateway to the Peak District, and has much to offer visitors. The town is famous for its 14th-century church with its crooked spire twisting curiously from its centre, while the town offers guests the opportunity to explore the market and many of the specialist shops dotted in and out of the shambles. The town also boasts Queens Park, with its lake, walks and summer bandstand, as well as a museum and theatre. Close by you will find the impressive Elizabethan Hardwick Hall, with its six grand towers elaborately monogramed with Bess of Hardwick’s initials, overlooking the superb gardens and walled courtyards of the grounds. Also popular with visitors is the semi-ruined 17th-century mansion of Bolsover Castle, set high on a wooded hilltop, looking west towards the heights of the Peak District.

Within easy reach you will discover attractions such as Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, Matlock and Bakewell, or the opera house at Buxton. Alternatively, the Peak District offers a magnitude of walks and cycling for those feeling active. Bradley Hall, built in 1774, has retained many of its original features including fireplaces, flagstone and wooden floors, mullion windows and shutters. A south-facing garden completes this lovely historic property, and also makes the ideal place for relaxing with a glass of wine or al-fresco dining in the warm, balmy summer evenings, since there also an outdoor table seating eight guests where you can dine in style. The village is ringed by rocks and tors and is set in one the of the most stunning parts of the Peak District, with two excellent pubs. Fantastic walking can be found from the doorstep and for nature lovers, there are great spots for birdwatching in the surrounding areas. For days out, the magnificent stately homes, including the beautiful Chatsworth House (8 miles) and Haddon Hall (4 miles) are an absolute must see, whilst a little further afield, but well worth a visit is Hardwick Hall (National Trust). For water sport enthusiasts, Carsington Water is within easy reach, with sailing, wind-surfing and canoeing all available.

Carsington Water offers nature trails, a wildlife sanctuary, riding, water sports, cycle hire and a restaurant. There are many excellent pubs in the surrounding villages. Welcome to Brewers Cottage, with a contemporary open-plan kitchen, dining room and living area, it has been nicely kitted out with everything you’ll need to prepare delicious meals throughout your stay.
There is comfortable seating for all guests along with a Smart TV to watch your favourite film or show and unwind after a day of exploring. Enjoy a restful night’s sleep in one of the two bedrooms, offering a kingsize bed or twin beds. For a bit of ‘you time’, retreat to the bathroom, where you’ll find a walk-in shower. Step outside and you can breathe in the fresh Montgomeryshire air with your morning coffee. You may wish to enjoy long lazy lunches on the outdoor dining furniture or relax in your own private hot tub.
Fans of the great outdoors will love the location. Brewer’s cottage sits within Montgomery, with its medieval street layout, imposing Town Hall, mix of Georgian, Victorian and timber framed buildings, it’s a place where time seems to stand still. A stone’s throw from Offa’s Dyke National Trails and National Cycle Route 81 and within 30 minutes’ drive of the Cambrian Way. Montgomery is a superb base from which to explore scenic mid-Wales. And, with a wealth of comfortable and friendly places to eat and drink, you can be sure of a warm welcome in the town. If you wish to head slightly further afield, you’re within an hour’s drive of Snowdonia National Park.

Entering The Stone Barn after walking up the garden path, you’ll find your shoe storage, hot tub towels and the ground floor toilet, perfect when nipping to and from the tub. The ground floor has a large open plan living space with French doors opening directly into the enclosed garden where you have a deck to enjoy your morning coffee, a patio with a table and seating for eight, and a brick-built BBQ. The kitchen is well-equipped with everything you’ll need during your stay, whilst meals are enjoyed seated on the handmade tables and benches. The living area boasts a large L-sofa with ample space for a full house. The log burner takes centre stage so everyone can enjoy the extra warmth of the fire whilst chatting or watching a film on the TV.
The sheltered hot tub seats eight adults and can be enjoyed all year round, despite the unpredictable English weather! There are two en-suite bedrooms; the spacious super king is on the ground floor with a walk-in shower and the other is located upstairs with a kingsize bed and enclosed shower. The remaining first floor rooms also offer kingsize beds and share a larger bathroom with both a shower and bathtub. All the beds in the property can be split into singles upon request. Dogs are welcome in The Stone Barn; the fenced garden means you won’t need to worry about any escape artists, and the owners are happy to offer access to various fields on the farm for ’walkies’.
There’s nothing better than a refreshing walk in the country air and there are plenty of routes on offer right on the doorstep so make sure you pack your walking boots! A short journey by car reveals even more opportunities, from stunning natural beauty spots, with routes suitable from novice to the most-seasoned ramblers, like Stanage and Curbar Edge or the magnificent Mam Tor. Picturesque villages such as Bakewell and Castleton are great for coffee and cake pit-stops along the way, whilst there’s also tons of great days out for families such as Chatsworth Farmyard and Adventure Playground, The Heights of Abraham, and Alton Towers. Sheffield is only a 20-minute drive away and equally as close to the stunning scenery of South Yorkshire. There are two pubs within walking distance from the farm, plus more a short drive away.

Squirrel Cottage has been renovated in 2023, to a tasteful and modern standard. As you arrive and step into the open plan living space, you will find a beautiful island (with built-in hob) in the centre of the room, which also provides dining space for up to four guests to sit comfortably. The kitchen has all the appliances you should need to cook up a storm if you wish to do so! The living area has comfortable seating with a large, wall-mounted, Smart TV and to finish the room off nicely; bi-fold doors lead out into the garden, which can be left open on days that allow.
Upstairs is the master bedroom with a kingsize bed, which has the addition of a galleried snug area with TV and bean bags to give you a little quiet corner to enjoy, and also an en-suite with freestanding bath (please be careful on the laddered steps to get to this area). The second bedroom is a king which can be split into two singles if required, and has wardrobe space. Outside is a great size garden, which has a lawned area to the right as well as a patio directly outside the bi-fold doors. You can sit on the garden furniture and watch the squirrels!
Squirrel Cottage is located in close proximity to the town centre of Glossop, just a short walk away from all it has to offer, including coffee shops, pubs and restaurants as well as supermarkets and shops. Manor park and gardens are also just around the corner. There is a variety of walks surrounding Glossop, such as, a car-free Longendale Trail which has beautiful scenery to take in while you enjoy your walk or cycle, plus you are only a 30-minute drive from Edale, Castleton or the spa town of Buxton, all offering further fantastic walking routes which are picturesque.

This beautifully presented cottage is in the heart of Bakewell, a town famous for its tasty puddings and padlock bridge amongst other things. Due to the cottage being on the hills you benefit from the outstanding, far reaching views of the town, golf course and beyond. Bakewell is home to traditional markets, it is great to walk around the local shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants that are all within walking distance of the property. Nestled in the heart of the Peak District, Bakewell is surrounded by many local attractions including Castleton Caves, the Monsal Trail, Chatsworth House and more. If you are a keen walker you are truly spoilt for choice in a location like this.
On the ground floor there is a modern kitchen diner with all you need to cook up your favourite meal; a living room with feature fireplace and TV. The bathroom is also located on the ground floor with a freestanding bath and shower enclosure. Please note the stairs are relatively steep. Upstairs is a double bedroom and a twin bedroom. Every room within the property is finished to a standard of excellence. Step out from the patio doors of the sitting room into the most delightful rear garden, complete with an additional dining area and enclosed lawn. The garden has a private, roofed hot tub for you to enjoy with your favourite tipple at your convenience.
