The surrounding area of the Peak District holds many beautiful towns and villages which are easily reached including the small picturesque village of Edale, home to the start/end of the UK’s first long distance walking path - The Pennine Way. Set in the stunning Hope Valley countryside, the rural hill village of Castleton, famous for its caverns, can be reached in half an hour and Bakewell, home to its namesake pudding and the magnificent historic houses of Chatsworth Estate and Haddon Hall, can be reached within 45 minutes’. Horse riding can also be found nearby, and for children, Hayfield Park is ¼ mile which consists of playground, zip line, skateboard ramps and a mini bike track. Blakelow Barn is just a short stroll down the country lanes outside of the village of Tansley. The village has a fantastic garden centre which is a pleasure to walk around with a cafe inside too, plus the addition of two pubs in the village and all are within walking distance. You are spoilt for walks here too being centrally located in the Peak District as there are many trails and routes to be enjoyed, the most local being the Lumsdale Waterfalls which are beautiful to see. Other attractions include Chatsworth House, where you can spend the day exploring this stately home and its gardens, which are often dressed with a theme! Which theme will they be showcasing when you visit? If you don’t wish to explore inside Chatsworth House then you are still welcome to enjoy the grounds and the many walks you can partake in from here.

The historic market town of Chesterfield acts as the gateway to the Peak District, and has much to offer visitors. The town is famous for its 14th-century church with its crooked spire twisting curiously from its centre, while the town offers guests the opportunity to explore the market and many of the specialist shops dotted in and out of the shambles. The town also boasts Queens Park, with its lake, walks and summer bandstand, as well as a museum and theatre. Close by you will find the impressive Elizabethan Hardwick Hall, with its six grand towers elaborately monogramed with Bess of Hardwick’s initials, overlooking the superb gardens and walled courtyards of the grounds. Also popular with visitors is the semi-ruined 17th-century mansion of Bolsover Castle, set high on a wooded hilltop, looking west towards the heights of the Peak District.
Within easy reach you will discover attractions such as Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, Matlock and Bakewell, or the opera house at Buxton. The largest inland marina in Europe, Mercia Marina has a host of facilities on-site within a few minutes’ walk of the lodge. These include cafes, restaurants, a deli, and a general store. The Boardwalk is a promenade of boutique retailers – clothes and gift shops, a beauty salon, a jewellers and interior design shops centered around the two-storey bar and restaurant (go upstairs for the best views). Stroll along the raised wooden walkway to watch the colourful boats and the wildlife, stop for a coffee and cake, or treat yourself to a glass of wine. You’ll also discover nice walks within the Marina grounds with ideal spots to sit, relax and watch the world go by. If you fancy boating along the canal, the Mercia Swan runs trips in summer. The Marina has its own Community Bicycle scheme, which provides bicycles free to use for residents and visitors (bring your own helmet!).
Rosemary Lodge is the perfect base to explore all that the local area has to offer. Close by Willington, Melbourne, Tutbury and Repton are lovely villages, the latter being the capital of the ancient kingdom of Mercia. If you like to explore on foot, there are interesting walks including the Trent and Mersey Canal with its towpath and locks. We provide for your use OS Explorer maps and maps of circular walks in the local area including the National Forest. It’s a great base to explore the Peak District too, the market towns of Bakewell, Belper and Ashbourne, the world-famous Potteries including Denby Pottery Village and the many nearby National Trust properties. For wildlife lovers, the Willlington Wetlands nature reserve is just the other side of the village and is home to newly introduced beavers (and their kits, born in 2021) as well as many species of bird. At Mercia Marina itself, you may see heron, geese, ducks, swans, grebes, kingfishers, oystercatchers, goldfinches, bullfinches and long tailed tits.

The historical village of Wirksworth is only 3 miles away and is home to a well-established art and architecture trail, arts festival every September and has a range of cafes, pubs and restaurants. Just a 15 minute drive away is Carsington Water and the popular town of Ashbourne. Also close by is the Peak District town of Matlock, together with its neighbour, Matlock Bath, which are set in the beautiful wooded gorge of the river Derwent. Matlock offers a range of shops, pubs, and restaurants as well as a whole host of other exciting attractions. Magnificent views down the gorge can be enjoyed from the cable car, which takes visitors up to the Heights of Abraham - a great place for all the family! South of the town is the start of the High Peak Cycle Trail, whilst to the north lie the market town of Bakewell, Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House - not to be missed! Close by Belper, situated in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site, is a town with a long and famous history dating back to the 13th century, when it was then called Beaurepaire (beautiful retreat), a name that still holds today. Now you’ll find it to be a spirited and bustling town, with attractions including the North Mill, Long Row and the River Gardens. - Cutthorpe, EnglandThis delightful cottage can be found on the edge of the Peak District in the picturesque village of Cutthorpe, down a private country lane on the owner’s non-working farm of 2 acres. Green Farm is surrounded by fields, woodland, footpaths and bridleways with direct access to the Linacre Reservoirs and Holmebrook Country Park. Tawny Owl Barn is a beautifully converted stone barn, situated over two floors, retaining many original features. The ground floor lays claim to a cosy living room complete with a warming wood burner, leather sofas, exposed stone walls and wooden beams. There is also a fully-equipped kitchen/dining room, a great social space with a large dining table so you can have a home cooked meal with all the family, as well as a single bedroom with an oak sliding barn door. Head upstairs where you will find two en-suite bedrooms with varnished, natural wooden floors, one with a double bed and one with twin beds. Double glazed and centrally heated throughout, this barn is perfect for families and groups all year round.
Outside, there is a fully enclosed private garden with a patio table and chairs, a barbeque and views over open countryside. There is a gate giving access to the fully enclosed hot tub (which is available all year for an additional charge, payable locally). This also includes the supply of additional towels and dressing gowns. We have a one acre paddock to exercise your dog in. Up to two well behaved dogs.
Cutthorpe has two pubs within walking distance that are dog friendly and serve food. It has a pretty village green and benefits from panoramic views over Chesterfield with its famous crooked spire. The village is located on the edge of the Peak District National Park, yet is only 3 miles from The popular market town of Chesterfield. Its perfect location allows you to explore historic houses, walking, cycling and visiting the tourist towns of Bakewell, Matlock, Castleton, Buxton, Eyam and Hathersage. If its stately homes, castles and gardens you would like to visit, the magnificent Chatsworth House is only 10 minutes drive away; the grounds and house will provide a full day out. Within 30 minutes you can also visit Packwood house, Bolsover castle, Renishaw hall, Haddon hall and Hardwick hall.
For those that are more active, there are numerous options varying from local walks from your door, to more adventurous walks in the Peak District. Cyclists are also well catered for with a variety of road and off road tracks and trails. Additionally there is shooting, canoeing, horse riding, go ape, abseiling, climbing, fishing and golf all available nearby. Alternatively you can just relax and enjoy the tranquillity that Green Farm offers. The nearest shop is 2 miles, café 1½ miles, post office, doctors are all available locally.
