Tucked away in a peaceful and secluded village setting, these five comfortably furnished holiday cottages are set in an idyllic location, only 5 miles from the spectacular Bamburgh Castle and one of the longest sandy beaches in England, and within a few minutes’ drive of Seahouses, where regular boat trips depart for the Farne Islands. Between the Cheviots and the sea, there is easy touring through the beautiful countryside with its numerous castles, stately homes and NT properties. Furnished to a high standard, and close to the owners’ home, Fordson offers single-storey accommodation and Ferguson is a detached two-storey cottage. The Mill House stands as a detached converted barn, with Waren View and The Granary Cottage forming an adjoining pair. This is an ideal choice for family holidays, with use of a very pleasant lawned area by a stream. There is also shared use of the owners’ hard tennis court nearby.

Warenford Village serves as an excellent base from which to discover Northumberland and the Scottish border country. Just 4 miles distant lies Budle Bay, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as an SSSI, with the ancient walled town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (15 miles) and the Duchess of Northumberland’s ornamental gardens a short drive away. Created to rival the best in Europe, the gardens are contemporary in design and include waterfalls and cascading plumes set within landscaped grounds with themed planted areas. Also sure to delight both young and old alike is a visit to neighbouring Alnwick Castle, which served as the location for the Harry Potter films. Home of the Percy family, it stands as the second largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor Castle, with some of its rooms open to the public and displaying a wealth of decorative and fine art.

Within easy reach, too, is Holy Island – renowned for its medieval religious heritage, priory and picturesque castle – and also known by its Anglo-Saxon name of Lindisfarne. Accessed by a paved causeway at low tide, the island is popular with bird-watchers and nature lovers, with the north-western portion of the island being maintained as a nature reserve, where terns, plovers and seals can be observed. Whilst on the island, a trip to The Museum of Island Life will reveal former living and working conditions there, and St Aidan’s Winery tempts visitors with its sweet concoction of local Lindisfarne Mead.
There are quiet country lanes for cycling and several excellent golf courses nearby, as well as a selection of shops in Belford (3 miles) and good inns and restaurants in which to enjoy a family meal locally – the nearest pub with restaurant being just 30 yards.

Nearby Seahouses, famous for its lovely fish and chips, is a bustling harbour town unchanged for years. Take a boat trip from here to the Farne Islands to see the migrating birds or seals. No trip to Northumberland is complete without heading over to Holy Island, reached by a causeway at low tide. You will find golf courses, hills and valleys for strolling, rambling, cycling or driving. Claremont is a deceptively spacious cottage bursting with character and period features. Fully renovated in 2020 to a high standard, natural traditional materials have been used whilst updating the cottage for comfortable modern living. Situated opposite St Paul’s Church in the old village centre of North Sunderland, now part of Seahouses, a mile from Seahouses North Beach. The cottage is set back from the road and enjoys a very quiet and secluded location, yet the bustling harbour and seafront are just ten minute’s walk away. This cottage features exposed stone walls and beams in most rooms and is packed with original features. The exposed wooden lintels are derived from ship’s timbers and the original 200-year-old wood floors upstairs have been restored and sanded. The lighting is mounted in exposed steel conduit with Edison-style bulbs. Downstairs the floors are limestone flags throughout. The kitchen has a wide range of newly installed high gloss kitchen units, granite worktops and a vaulted ceiling. The living room has an exposed stone fireplace with a wood burner (all logs for the week included) and an open feature staircase. Upstairs there are two generously sized bedrooms both with kingsize beds. Unusually, the first bedroom is part of an impressive suite of three rooms comprising a bedroom, shower room and a spacious vaulted sitting room, only accessible to the occupants of bedroom 1. Both shower rooms are newly fitted with a walk-in shower. The sitting room over the archway has an electric log-effect stove. The bedding is crisp Egyptian cotton from The White Company with new Sleepeze pocket-sprung mattresses. The accommodation is immaculately presented with an eclectic mix of both old and new furniture selected to suit the character of the property.

Uniquely positioned to offer private access to the River Coquet where salmon and trout fishing can be available to guests, this cosy stone cottage has been sympathetically restored from an original farm building. Railway Cuttings melds traditional with contemporary to make it the perfect location for those wishing to get away and unwind. This elegant stone-built, semi-detached, single-storey cottage is situated at Falstone Station. Along with the owner’s home it is one of only a few cottages at this location, which was once part of the former Border Counties Railway line. The line has long gone but reminders of the route that linked England with Scotland are still there. It is only 520 yards from the local pub serving real ale and good food. Opposite the pub is a small tea room/shop in this pretty village of Falstone. The cottage has one double and one twin bedroom and sleeps four people in an elegant style.
