Kettleshulme itself is home to a 15th century country pub which offers a warm welcome and freshly cooked meals. The town of Whaley Bridge with its mix of shops, bars and restaurants plus train station with direct service to both Manchester and Buxton is a 5 minute drive. The National Trust Lyme Park with its glorious house and gardens can be reached on foot or by car and the magnificent historic houses of Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and the popular market town of Bakewell, 45 minute’s drive. A variety of Peak District villages are all easily reachable within half an hour’s drive including Edale, Tideswell and Castleton, and great days out for the family within an hour’s drive include the local Chestnut Centre Wildlife Park, Carsington Water, Matlock Bath with is cable car and the UK’s premier theme park Alton Towers. Located at the end of an unmade road, they sit quietly in this rural community, yet they are within easy driving distance of the city of Chester, famous for being a walled city with its unique half timbered galleried shops and its Victorian Eastgate clock - said to be the most photographed timepiece in the world after Big Ben. Chester has the largest amphitheatre in Britain, a 10th century cathedral, two renowned museums - the Grosvenor and Military Museums, and not forgetting the zoo! The walk around the walls is approximately 2 miles and offers a birdseye view of the city centre with views across to Wales’ magnificent mountains. Cheshire Oaks retail outlet village is a short drive away. At the end of the lane is the Beachin therapy swimming pool for dogs. Malpas, with its magpie style houses, Beeston with its castle, Tattenhall where the Cheshire Farm Dairy ice cream is made and Farndon which links Cheshire to Wales by a sandstone bridge are all an easy drive. This detached, Grade II listed, thatched holiday cottage, dates back to the 15th century and was the birthplace and home of John Middleton, the 9ft 3in giant known as the Childe of Hale. The village, home to two local pubs serving food, is on the Trans Pennine Trail and the area is great for walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers. Visit include Speke Hall, Liverpool, Albert Dock, Knowsley Safari Park, Chester, Haydock and Aintree racecourses. Offering a rural experience, Drumble Lodge can be found at the end of a winding country lane on a working farm amidst beautiful Cheshire countryside. The location is peaceful and serene, where you can enjoy the sounds of bird song throughout the day and the distinctive calls of owls at night. The farm on which the lodge stands has been registered as a wedding venue and will accommodate smaller weddings. Pet sheep and goats that meander around the paddock next to the lodge, and in the distance, you’ll see cows grazing in the meadow. A selection of outdoor seating areas are available where you can relax, unwind and once the sun sets gaze at the stars beyond through the telescope provided. A traditional dog friendly, food serving pub is a mere 10-minute walk, and ample footpaths radiate from the area just waiting to be explored. The pretty market town of Congleton can be reached in around 10 minutes and is home to ample amenities including a selection of supermarkets and shops together with many bars and restaurants.
The National Trusts Biddulph Grange Country Park and Little Moreton Hall are also accessible in around a 10-minute drive. You can take a waterside stroll along the River Dane, cycle the tranquil traffic free Biddulph Valley Way, or walk to the famous atmospheric ruins of Mow Cop Castle and lesser-known Old Man of Mow.
The Peak District National Park is around a 30-minute drive and the city of Manchester can be reached in under an hour on a direct train from Congleton station. For those with children Delamere Forest, Manley Mere and Britain’s premier theme park Alton Towers can be reached in around 45 minutes and then finally the city of Chester, Blue Planet Aquarium and Chester Zoo in around an hour.

Neighbouring New Mills can be reached in around a 10-minute drive and is home to the Torrs Riverside Park and Millennium Walkway, which is a much-admired bridge set deep into the gorge. Buxton is just 20 minutes and most famous for its therapeutic spring water, Pavilion Gardens and of course Opera House. Also, just 20 minutes is the beautiful honeypot village of Castleton, wonderful Edale which is the start/end of the Pennine Way and Hayfield from where you can hike to the highest point in the Peak District, Kinder Scout. Attractions nearby include the respective castles of Peckforton, Beeston and Cholmondley which can all be reached in 10–15 minutes, as can the world’s largest ice cream parlour at The Ice Cream Farm Tattenhall. Drift House is well located for events at Bolesworth Castle including Car Fest North and the International Horse Show. For anyone looking to explore the area on bike, the Sandstone Ridge provides quiet lanes over rolling hills with great café and lunch spots to break up your route, and off road trails are found at Delamere, and Llandegla Mountain Biking centre for the more adventurous riders. The centre of Manchester can be reached in around an hour, Liverpool in around 45 minutes or the historic city walls of Chester in around half an hour. Bollington is a thriving town with plenty of busy pubs, eateries, bars, and cafés, and both Whaley Bridge and Macclesfield have train stations offering a direct service to Manchester in under an hour. You can travel through Winnets Pass to the charming village of Castleton in just over half an hour or visit Chatsworth House and Bakewell in around 45 minutes. Matlock Bath and Alton Towers also make great days out - the choice really is yours to do as much or as little as you like.
