Just a one-mile walk from Flamborough’s magnificent lighthouse, these former agricultural barns, estimated to date back approximately 200 years, have been skillfully converted retaining many original features and exposed roof timbers. The location of these cottages affords far-reaching views, yet close to local amenities; each one has its own sitting-out area complete with garden furniture and with underfloor heating at ground level the holiday cottages remain cosy all year round. Built in 1860, the lighthouse stands guard atop the chalk cliff, as a silent sentinel, protecting shipping off Flamborough Head, and tours are available throughout the summer. The headland overlooks Selwick’s Bay, where visitors can stroll along the chalk paths descending to the sand and gravel beach with its fascinating rock pools. Flamborough Head Golf Course, 3/4 mile, offers a warm welcome for both golfers and diners in their clubhouse and another cliff top course can be found at Bridlington Links, 3 miles. The spectacular chalk cliffs to the north, with their panoramic views, are home to one of the largest nesting seabird colonies in England - RSPB Bempton. Built in 1818, this detached holiday cottage, a former chapel school room, stands adjacent to the owners’ working arable and livestock farm and provides a cosy rural retreat with scenic walks from the doorstep. Bird lovers can enjoy the close proximity to Tophill Low Nature Reserve and other reserves situated in the Yorkshire Nature Triangle including RSPB Bempton, Spurn Point and North Cave Wetlands. There are water sports activity centres at Billabong and Fosse Hill, golf at Hainsworth Park and fishing available locally. Visit the stately homes at Burton Agnes, Burton Constable and Sewerby Hall and enjoy the Yorkshire Wolds scenery which inspired the famous Hockney paintings. The location of the cottage feels remote, tranquil and deep in the heart of the countryside, perfect for getting away from it all, yet offering easy access to a range of services and attractions.

This is a perfect base for the wildlife enthusiast as it is located in the middle of Yorkshire’s Wildlife Triangle, with the internationally significant bird sites at Flamborough and Bempton a short drive away, regionally important wetland habitat with snakes, water voles and otters, and good viewing of hares, owls and kingfishers from the cottage. One guest logged 25 species from the cottage bench before breakfast in 2022. If the wildlife is being elusive our horses and poultry always enjoy attention.

The coastline is diverse with many different coastal landscapes to explore, lots of perfect dog friendly beaches and some classic ‘bucket and spade’ seaside towns. The area boasts some unique stately homes that are managed by their original families, or the East Riding of Yorkshire Council in one case, so are charmingly individual and most rewarding to visit.

For walkers, the Yorkshire Wolds give perfect views at every turn and facilitate a range of walks, from gentle ambles to leg burning route marches. Most walks enable you to include pretty villages and welcoming pubs. This location is a cyclist’s dream. Miles of quiet lanes with the option to pootle on the flat or flog up some serious scarp slopes and everything in-between. Whether on wheels or foot, you always feel like you have the landscape pretty much to yourself.

York, Scarborough and the North York Moors are also easily accessed from here. The market town of Driffield with a wide range of services and some quirky independent shops is a 10-minute drive away. The beautiful medieval town of Beverley is within easy access. It is the loveliest place to shop, lunch and admire what our ancestors could build. The more energetic will enjoy the Westwood pasture – 4 square kilometres of common land where dogs can, and do, go mad.

Closer to home, the nearest pubs (there are three of them), shop and railway station are in the village of Nafferton, approximately 2 miles away. The owners have extensive local knowledge and love to help guests make the most of their stay.

Tickton Hall is a 110-acre private country estate nestled at the end of a tree lined drive just outside the historical market town of Beverley. The estate has wonderful, established woodlands and parklands with grazing horses in abundance, which you can see from many of the cottages’ windows. It is also home to the Beverley Polo Club with two polo pitches, fabulous full-size arena and stabling for up to 60 horses. You just might be able to catch a polo match during your stay! You can even bring your horse on holiday with you, subject to availability at our Horse Hotel! These delightful, detached holiday properties (refs UKC458 and W44279) provide tastefully furnished bases from which to explore the area, or simply sit back and relax.
There are superb walks straight from the cottage doors. Within the estate you can walk around the picturesque horse exercise course or the cross country course, all within a couple of minutes of the cottages. Or if you are looking for a longer hike, the estate links to designated walks along the river bank that extend for miles. A must during your stay is a short stroll around the polo pitch to the fabulous country pub offering gorgeous local fare with a great garden for children or a suntrap spot by the river bank – no need to drive!
Beverley, 4 miles, is well known for its racecourse, minster and many boutiques and excellent coffee shops. The coast at Hornsea can be reached within 10 miles, with traditional amusements and promenade, and a wildlife centre at Hornsea Mere. York, a great place for a day out, is about an hour’s drive, and The Deep at Hull, one of the UK’s biggest aquariums, is about half an hour away. Beach 10 miles.
