Brightlingsea is a lovely and quaint seaside town with a boating lake, beaches and a lively busy harbour with boat trips available throughout the summer. The beaches are great for children and it really is an excellent location for families. Clacton with its famous pier is just a few miles away. The countryside around Brightlingsea is stunning and the area is perfect for walking and cycling. The town has a number of good pubs, cafes and restaurants, and is known for its three excellent fish and chip shops. It is conveniently located to explore the coast of Essex or, further inland, the county town of Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town, with a castle, museums, art gallery, many Roman remains, a good shopping centre, Colchester Zoo and a rail link to London (40 minutes). There is a foot ferry (summer months) to Mersea Island to Brightlingsea to enjoy the promenade, lido and fish and chips. The town of Colchester is close by, famous for its cobbled streets, castle and world renowned zoo, with a wide variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. Further afield are Ipswich, Chelmsford and Felixstowe. Mersea gets cut off for about an hour when there is a very high tide, usually once a month, so it’s worthwhile checking the tides, all adding to the uniqueness and charm.
