The cathedral city of Gloucester is just a short drive in the other direction, with its Victorian docks and designer retail outlet.
For some thrill-seeking adventures head to the Forest of Dean with its cycle tracks, and high rope Go Ape attraction (20 minutes away) with the Treetop Challenge and Forest Segways. Canoeing is within 30 minutes with the glorious Symonds Yat on the River Wye. Kayaking and paddle boarding also available at the Forest of Dean.
