This area is also where the yesteryear TV programme ‘Wurzle Gummidge’ was filmed.

Just outside the town and set in extensive parkland is the 18th century mansion of Broadlands, the former home of Lord Palmerston and the late Lord Louis Mountbatten. Broadlands is open to the public July and August, as well as hosting a range of shows, concerts and events throughout the year. The Old Cook House is a detached bungalow set in the grounds of the owners’ smallholding in Winchester. This ground-floor property offers peaceful accommodation for guests wanting to explore this rural location, but also within easy reach of the coast.
The Old Cook House boasts a king-size bedroom, and a twin bedroom also offers a well-equipped kitchen, a bathroom with an L-shaped bath and shower, as well as a living area complete with a feature fireplace (for ornamental purposes only), and a Smart TV. There is also the benefit of a boot room for when you need to dry off your dog. Outside, there is an enclosed garden with a private seating area where you can relax and take in the surroundings.

During the First World War, the village was used by the army which had an extensive veterinary hospital for horses. After the war the camps were split up into agricultural small holdings and the army huts were used as dwellings; part of this cottage was the army cookhouse, hence the name. There were many huts here in the 1960’s however The Old Cook House is the only remaining army hut in the area.
