Just outside the town and set in extensive parkland is the 18th century mansion of Broadlands, the former home of Lord Palmerston and the late Lord Louis Mountbatten. This ground floor property offers peaceful and welcoming accommodation for a family or group wanting to explore this charming rural location, whilst also being within easy reach of the coast.
The Old Cook House is perfect for a family of four, with the main bedroom offering a kingsize bed and the second bedroom with twin beds. The bungalow also offers a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom with L shaped bath and shower over, as well as a cosy living area complete with a feature fireplace (ornamental purposes only), and a Smart TV. There is also the benefit of a boot room for when you need to dry off your dog. Outside, there is a private seating area which is the perfect place to sit back, relax and take in the surroundings. The property is set in a quiet semi-rural location with walks directly from the property and a recreation ground within 5 minutes’ walk with plenty equipment for young children, football pitch and tennis court. From here there are footpaths with views of neighbouring farmland and villages. In the opposite direction there are walks with views of Winchester Cathedral and the local supermarket is just a 10-minute walk away. Historic Winchester is under 3 miles away with various museums including The Great Hall with the Round Table. Marwell Zoo and Winchester Science Centre with planetarium are within a 15-minute drive of The Old Cook House. Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market is very popular with it’s bustling atmosphere and wooden chalets with food, drinks and crafts for sale. Peppa Pig World and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard are both within a 40 minute drive. There are two golf courses within 2 miles, and one golf course within walking distance.
During the First World War, the village was used by the army which had an extensive veterinary hospital for horses. After the war the camps were split up into agricultural small holdings and the army huts were used as dwellings; part of this cottage was the army cook house, hence the name. There were many huts here in the 1960’s however The Old Cook House is the only remaining army hut in the area. The historic cathedral city of Winchester is a 15-minute drive. It boasts many historic attractions such as Winchester Cathedral, King Arthur’s Round Table and Jane Austen’s House. The city is also host to many events throughout the year including street theatre, jazz festivals and outdoor cinema and film events. Winchester is also known for its Christmas market with outdoor ice rink. Wander round the cobbled streets of Winchester and you will stumble across some of the best boutique shops and home to a thriving food scene. Market stalls, street food and farmer’s markets are frequently found too.
