Shanklin and its surrounding area offer a plethora of captivating sights and engaging activities for visitors to explore. In Shanklin itself, one can start by strolling along the picturesque Shanklin Chine, a stunning gorge with lush vegetation, cascading waterfalls, and enchanting pathways. The Old Village is another must-visit, with its charming thatched-roof cottages, quaint shops, and cosy tearooms exuding a delightful ambience. A visit to Shanklin Beach is a must, with its golden sands stretching along the coastline, or the nearby Sandown Bay also offers opportunities for water sports such as kayaking or paddleboarding.
Beyond Shanklin, the Isle of Wight has much to offer. A visit to the iconic Needles is a sight not to be missed, with The Needles Park providing a range of attractions including breathtaking views. History buffs can explore Carisbrooke Castle, a medieval fortress with a rich past, while outdoor enthusiasts can venture into the island’s countryside, with its rolling hills, picturesque villages and scenic walks, or enjoy the many activities the island has to offer.

Downstairs you’ll find an incredibly spacious living area finished with leather sofas and large feature windows looking out into the garden. When you feel like cooking up a storm, the farmhouse style kitchen is equipped with all the necessary mod cons. Upstairs, the five bedrooms provide the perfect places to rest your weary head after a busy day.

On a warm day, you can step out into the patio and garden area and enjoy the sunshine is blissful peace and quiet. Complete with patio table and chairs and a picnic bench, this is the perfect spot to sit and enjoy a bite to eat or a glass of wine.

Clarendon House is located just a short stroll from Shanklin Old Village, famous for its thatched cottages, quirky gift shops and traditional tea rooms. Shanklin Theatre is just a two-minute walk from the house or if you fancy a day at the seaside, Shanklin Seafront and its amusements are also nearby.

With a wonderful beach just moments away, this spacious apartment, new for 2018, is located on the eastern side of the island, just outside of Shanklin town. Ideal for families, the property is able to accommodate up to six guests and it is also dog friendly, benefiting from an enclosed rear garden.
The excellent nearby beach offers a classic British seaside vibe and can be accessed from a set of steps from the top of the cliff path which is close to the property. Alternatively you can gain access from either of the flanking esplanades at Shanklin or Sandown. As this beach is effectively tucked away and not quite as straightforward to reach as its resort neighbours, it is very often quieter during the busier seasons, making it a peaceful alternative for a day on the beach, and the perfect spot for surfing, kayaking or paddle boarding, as the sea is relatively shallow and clear. Take advantage of the instructional school which is located at the back of the beach that offers a whole range of water sports activities for all ages and abilities. There are beach huts which you can look to hire and also a number of benches to sit on along the sea wall path, and there is also a café and barbecue area which is always popular during the summer season. When the tide is further in and the golden sands briefly disappear, the walk along the sea wall between Sandown and Shanklin is highly recommended as it offers a wide, flat path which is ideal for both walkers and cyclists.
Away from the beach, the town of Shanklin hosts a multitude of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants to enjoy. The old village is world famous with its pretty thatched pubs, rock shop, cosy tea rooms, restaurants and craft shops. The esplanade is packed full of amusements and crazy golf, as well as several waterfront eateries.
Neighbouring Sandown is a truly traditional beach resort with pier, amusements and pitch and putt. The Isle of Wight Zoo, and the Dinosaur Isle attraction can be found at the northern end of the esplanade towards Yaverland and Culver Down. The town is brimming with attractions to entertain visitors, most of them right on the beach front itself, so again you never have to stray too far from the sand. Further afield, there are numerous attractions to discover for all ages on this beautiful sunny island. To the west you’ll find The Needles Landmark Attraction with its chairlift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse and coloured sands of Alum Bay. Venture north towards Cowes and you can pay a visit to Queen Victoria’s favourite holiday residence, Osborne House and Gardens, or perhaps go south past Ventnor down to Blackgang Chine, the oldest themed attraction in the UK. Fresh for the Summer Season of 2021 The Grain Store (UK34014) and The Hayloft (UK34015) are two new properties available at Cooks Castle Farm, an equestrian centre and stables, so there are plenty of lovely horses to see during your holiday. These Grade II listed buildings now offer two bedroom properties side by side, able to comfortably accommodate up to four guests each. They are situated on the outskirts of the quiet village of Wroxall approximately 3 miles north of the seaside town of Ventnor. The area is a firm favourite with cyclists, walkers and ramblers due to its close proximity to the southern tip of the island, an Area of Natural Beauty, with an ever-changing coastal landscape boasting breathtaking panoramic views and a wealth of wildlife. Accessed via a rough track, the location offers easy access to many miles of foot and bridle paths over the lovely countryside that surrounds the village.
On the ground floor you’ll find an open plan living room dining and kitchen space where you can cook up those home-cooked recipes and then gather the family for an evening in front of the Smart TV or exit out of the French doors into the enclosed rear garden which stretches across the back of the property. The master bedroom has a king size bed and floor to ceiling window taking full advantage of the rural view to the front aspect, the second bedroom is a twin room with two single 3ft beds.
The island has become a real hot spot for cycling enthusiasts with a choice of challenging off-road bridleways, peaceful byways and level purpose-made tracks running along its former railway lines. You can cycle to the famous Needles landmark or take on the full round the island route, which is 66 miles long and is used for the annual Isle of Wight Randonnee held over the May bank holiday. You can also travel along the route at a more leisurely pace and along the way you will find numerous restaurants, pubs and cafés amongst the quaint villages and towns serving tasty local produce.
The popular seaside resort of Ventnor is just a short drive away offering a number of lovely seaside tea shops, pubs and restaurants dotted along the Esplanade. There are also some quirky and bespoke shops, a park and a children’s paddling pool. The town, which for the most part is built on the steep hill leading to the beach, retains its original seaside charm and makes a great day out for all the family. Just down the road from the properties is the popular Isle of Wight donkey sanctuary, which is open all year round, weather permitting. Further afield, local points of interest include St Catherine’s Lighthouse, where you can explore the area where Marconi made some of his early experiments in radio, St Catherines Oratory, a medieval lighthouse on top of St Catherine’s Down, and Castle Cove (also known as Castlehaven or Reeth Bay), where there is a little open-air beach café (seasonal opening).
Outdoor pursuits on the island are well catered for and include horse riding, fishing, cycling, paragliding, water sports and golf. There are numerous attractions to discover for all ages. Pay a visit to Queen Victoria’s favourite holiday residence, Osborne House and Gardens, Blackgang Chine, the oldest themed attraction in the UK, the famous Needles, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Tapnell Farm Park, Carisbrooke Castle or the sailing towns of Yarmouth and Cowes. There is plenty to discover and keep you entertained.

The position of Captain’s Cottage couldn’t be better, it is right in the heart of this beautiful seaside resort, with shops, bars, and restaurants on your doorstep. It’s only a 10-minute stroll to the wonderful sandy beaches too. Shanklin is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the island, home to the Old Village and Shanklin Chine. The seafront is packed with amusements, activities, and crazy golf courses. Within a moment’s walk of Captain’s Cottage is the bus station, which has great links to anywhere on the island and there is also an open-top bus in the summer season, great for sight seeing. At the end of the road, there is also a train station, which stops at several coastal towns. Osborne House was once Queen Victoria’s favourite residence and is open to the public and well worth a visit, as are Carisbrook Castle, The Needles rock formations, Robin Hill park with acres of parkland, natural woodland, countryside gardens, adventures, and special events, Ventnor Botanical Gardens and Shanklin Chine, a deep wooded gorge with streams and waterfalls.
The model village at Godshill is also not to be missed as this gives a good overview of the island and its attractions, all in miniature of course. Start your holiday as soon as you hop onto one of the many ferry options, whether you whiz over on the Hovercraft or one of the car ferry links.
