Also, Whitby boasts a colourful harbour, 3 miles of sandy beach, the 12th century Abbey ruins and St Marys Church. Sea Haven is a large spacious bungalow situated at Hunmanby Gap just over 3 miles from the popular seaside resort of Filey. The owner has taken great care in providing a fantastic holiday home for families to enjoy. The large open plan living and kitchen area has floor to ceiling patio doors taking advantage of the magnificent sea views and leading out onto a decked seating area and lawn. There’s a cosy dual sided wood burner separating the kitchen and the living/dining area. The kitchen has all the mod-cons expected of a house of this standard as well as a utility area. There are gardens to the front and the rear which are completely enclosed. For guests taking their four-legged friends, a dog crate is also provided.
A 2-minute walk and you are on a stunning vast beach that stretches for over 3 miles to Filey and beyond. It’s a beach that never looks busy as it’s so wide and has lots of space for everybody. Great for the children or walking the dogs, or watching the horse riders galloping through the waves in the early morning. There is an excellent café that serves the beach guests and provides meals and drinks as well as ice creams. Filey is a very traditional seaside resort, not quite as busy as its neighbour Scarborough however it has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants. Filey is also the end of the Cleveland Way walk so you can enjoy a walk along the cliff tops to Scarborough following part of this very famous 109 mile trail. The seaside resorts of Scarborough and Bridlington are just a short drive away. Both resorts are very popular holiday destinations and worth a visit during your stay.
The RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton Cliffs is just a short drive where you can see the puffins and other migrating birds from the viewing points on the cliff tops. Yorkshire is famous for its stately homes and Sewerby Hall, Burton Agnes Hall, Sledmere House and the wonderful Castle Howard are just a short drive. Sea Haven is not far from the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds made famous by the artist David Hockney, who often paints the rolling hills of the Wolds. Beach 70 yards. The house sleeps up to eight people comfortably with a kingsize bed, double bed, small double and two single beds. There is something for everyone to enjoy during your stay at Rosary House, with Scarborough only a short 10-minute drive away where you can spend the day at the beach, or check out the impressive views of the coast from Scarborough Castle. You can dine out at one of the many local village pubs in Irton, and the award-winning fish and chip shop which are only a short walk away. If you would like to venture a little further, Whitby is only a 40-minute drive, or you can experience an old-fashioned steam train ride from Pickering to Whitby. Families can enjoy a day out at the Sea Life Centre in Scarborough or Flamingo Land, near Pickering, only 30 minutes away. You can hop on the train to the historical city of York for a day trip and The North York Moors are right on your doorstep for great walking routes. Secluded yet surprisingly close to town, the seaside resort of Whitby is just a few miles away, easily accessible by car or on foot. The town is home to a jam-packed calendar of events which take place all year round, and you can take a tour bus to see the fascinating sites, which include the stunning Abbey and St Mary’s Church high above the cliffs. There are also regular boat cruises that offer a different aspect of the beautiful town from the water. A day trip to Robin Hood’s Bay is a must during your stay at The Hideaway. Just 3 miles away, the bay is full of character and charm, thanks to its cobbled, narrow streets and alleyways lined with an ecleclic mix of individually-run shops, pubs and tearooms, all set before a lovely beach that’s ideal for rock pooling and fossil hunting.

A little closer to home, Hawsker has a warm and cosy local pub that serves local food, and for the outdoorsy types, there’s a disused railway line only a few hundred yards away that stretches some 21 miles from Whitby to Scarborough.

The North York Moors National Park lies just inland from the North Yorkshire coastal resorts of Whitby and Scarborough, with over 1,400 miles of trails, footpaths and bridleways that cobweb the rolling heather-clad moorland and meet in the pretty rural villages and historic country towns. Carving a pathway deep through the North York Moors is the famous North York Moors Steam Railway, which carries its passengers from Pickering in the south northward to Grosmont, and then along the lovely Esk Valley to Whitby on the coast. Set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this former mill workers’ cottage is in an idyllic tranquil location at the bottom of a country lane set between the river on one side and a charming mill pond on the other. It makes for an ideal location from which to walk or cycle direct from the door through some of the most scenic countryside in Yorkshire. Conquer one, or all three of the ’Three Peaks’; Ingleborough, Whernside and Penyghent, or cycle through the peaceful and rarely visited Kingdale with its quiet lanes and isolated farmhouses. Alternatively, both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District are readily accessible by car. The bustling market town of Settle is well served with a variety of pubs and restaurants and is just 1 mile away. Here you will also find a swimming pool, golf course and weekly market. There is a dining room in the centre of the house, this beautiful room boasts a second multifuel stove, as well as a wine cooler, where you can enjoy atmospheric meals. The country kitchen adjoining the dining room has an authentic English heritage feel, complete with a Belfast style sink and characterful units.
Upstairs you have the bathroom with a shower attachment over the bath. As well as two bedrooms, the master bedroom has a king bed with a feature fireplace as well as sash windows, evoking the houses long history. The second bedroom has a double bed, making this ideal for two couples travelling together as well as small families. The house is pet friendly, and this is a great destination for dogs as there are some wonderful walking trails as well as many dog friendly pubs and cafes to choose from.
Scalby is a village on the outskirts of Scarborough and on the road to Whitby. This pretty village has a general store, a couple of traditional pubs and you are just over the road from a lovely, friendly café, making it a good location for a meal or a social evening when staying on holiday. Scalby Beck runs along the edge of the village down towards the sea, offering picturesque rural views and is perfect for dog walking, especially if your dog enjoys a swim. As well as a Methodist chapel, there is St Laurence’s Church, a Grade II listed building dating back to 1150AD, it is the oldest recorded building in the village. There are tennis courts, a bowling green and playing fields for cricket and football. There is a regular bus service linking the village to Scarborough and Whitby.
For the more energetic, take the Cinder Track either on foot or by bike, and enjoy the stunning coastal views along the way. Scalby is also on the route of the Tabular Hills Walk, which links Scarborough to the market town of Helmsley on the western side of the North York Moors National Park. There are many activities and attractions in the area. Dalby Forest has world cup mountain bike trails, Go Ape tree adventure and nature walks. The RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs is worth a visit and is home to thousands of sea birds nesting precariously on the cliff face. Keen birdwatchers can see kittiwakes, gannets and puffins, and offshore porpoises and grey seals can be spotted.
Scarborough is just a 10-minute drive away where you have the castle overlooking the wide sweeping beaches, and Peasholm Park with oriental gardens, an open-air theatre and paddle boats. There is also the Alpamare waterpark and spa, where in an evening you can soak in the steaming pools outside while watching the stars. Traditional seaside resorts can easily be reached including Whitby, famous for its fish and chips and cliff top abbey ruins. Also worth a visit are the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay. Further inland, the medieval city of York can be reached in around an hour. Beach 2½ miles. Explore Whitby, with its Gothic abbey, quaint cobbled old town and museums including one on a ship with an exhibition dedicated to the voyager, Captain Cook. Take advantage of your close proximity to the coast and spend a day at Whitby Beach, where you can try your hand at surfing or paddle boarding with the local surf school, sunbathe with your favourite book, or beachcomb the shores, looking out for fossils as well as fragments of precious jet. Jet jewellery is highly regarded here, and you can visit many jet jewellery shops as well as the historical workshop. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy a whale watching cruise, searching for seals, dolphins, and whales, which frequent the shores especially in September. Or travel further south along the coast to Bempton Cliffs where thousands of seabirds nest annually at the RSPB site.
The coastline here is fabulous with the neighbouring villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick, Staithes and Sandsend all perfect for a scenic day out all year round. Some visitors love soaking up the sun, whilst others are enthralled on a stormy day watching the waves. Be sure to visit the North York National Park, where a plethora of scenic walks through wooded valleys await, taking the steam train from Whitby gives you a wonderful tour of some of the prettiest villages on the moors. All year round there are many events to enjoy, and for younger family members there is Flamingoland theme park and zoo, the Sea Life Centre, Dalby Forest’s Go Ape and Alpamare Water Park all within a 40 minutes’ drive. Wind your way up the cottage staircase to the spacious first floor where you will find three beautifully presented bedrooms and the house bathroom. You are a short drive away from the market towns of Pocklington and Market Weighton. Both offer a plethora of restaurants, independent shops, tea rooms and supermarkets. A day in Beverley or York should not be missed and Ashley Cottage also provides a great base from which to enjoy the stunning East Yorkshire Coastline.

Whilst here, you can visit the Gothic-style cathedral, step inside the time capsule of the Jorvik Viking Centre, or enjoy the vast array of shops, restaurants and pubs within the city. Nearby, for children, you have York Maze, Piglets Farm as well as Flamingo Land theme park and zoo. Set in the hamlet of Starbotton in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this Grade II listed, end of terrace cottage dates back to 1663. As such, it has been sympathetically refurbished and makes a quiet retreat from busy everyday life.
