Perfect for horse lovers, Middleham is renowned for its long history and also serves as a thriving racehorse community. Guests will be able to watch as top class racehorses are ridden daily through the village and up to the gallops in the fields at the edge of the village. Ideal for a luxurious romantic break, there are many pubs, restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance and all are well known for serving good quality, local food and produce. Middleham Castle lies just behind Barbican Cottage and was once the home of Richard III and was referred to in former times as the “Windsor of the North”. Middleham is a great place for families too with plenty of attractions to visit and explore within a short driving distance. Local attractions include the popular Chocolate Factory, Tennants Auction House and tea pottery which are all located in Leyburn just two and a half miles away as well as The Forbidden Corner which is a hidden folly offering twists, turns and excitement around every corner, and is situated just four miles away from Barbican Cottage. Another popular attraction is the Wensleydale Railway which stops in Leyburn and travels through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. Guests who enjoy walking, cycling or even just exploring will find an abundance of established public footpaths, cycle paths and bridleways that lead right from the village itself onwards towards and through the Dales and beyond. A visit to the Dales Countryside Museum is also a must. The scenery here is magnificent at any time of year and guests will find themselves on a journey through heather covered grouse moorland, open countryside, natural woodland and pretty, little Yorkshire villages. A little further afield, but still within easy driving distance, guests will be able to visit Castle Bolton, Jervaulx Abbey and Wensleydale Creamery as well as Aysgarth Falls, Hawes, Gayle Mill, York, Harrogate and Ripon.

The pretty village of Starbotton is in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with a cluster of stone built, chocolate box cottages surrounding the friendly local pub, a mere 2 minutes’ walk away. The Fox and Hounds is the heart of the local community, offering high quality, hearty dining, with well-kept local ales in a relaxed, dog friendly atmosphere. The area is ideally located for exploring by car, walking and cycling.
There are many walks right from your very doorstep including the Dales Way, accessed by a connecting footpath leading down to the River Wharfe, which is just 300 yards away. The area is also a mecca for cyclists with the Tour De Yorkshire route having run through locally. Other country pursuits such as fishing, rock climbing and even pony trekking are all available nearby. The popular town of Grassington is just a 15-minute drive away and plays host to events all year round including a Summer Arts Festival with famed singers, presenters, poets and authors, and a winter Dickensian Festival to capture the spirit of Christmas.

Rosary House is a spacious stone farmhouse which was built in 1750 and is located in the quaint village of Irton, 4 miles from the glorious golden Cayton Bay, with the larger coastal destinations of Scarborough and Filey also within a 15-minute drive. The Dreamer’s Hut is named after ’The Hawnby Dreamers’ - three local shepherds who in the mid-1700s, fell asleep whilst working in the fields on a hot day in the adjacent valley of Ladhill Ghyll, of which the hut overlooks. The shepherds awoke to discover they had each had the same vivid dream of spiritual awakening and being called to change their lives for the better. The three subsequently walked to Newcastle to hear the preaching of the famous John Wesley and converted to Methodism, bringing this faith back to Hawnby. There are also regular boat cruises that offer a different aspect of the beautiful town from the water. A day trip to Robin Hood’s Bay is a must during your stay at The Hideaway. Just 3 miles away, the bay is full of character and charm, thanks to its cobbled, narrow streets and alleyways lined with an ecleclic mix of individually-run shops, pubs and tearooms, all set before a lovely beach that’s ideal for rock pooling and fossil hunting.

This imposing Edwardian country house stands in its own garden overlooking sheep grazing the common at Goathland, whilst the views of moors and forest may be enjoyed from the west-facing terrace. Set in the village of Goathland, perhaps better known as Aidensfield from the TV series Heartbeat, in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, it is in an excellent area for walking – the North Yorks Moors steam railway stops at the village station on its journey from Pickering to Grosmont. Whitby being only 9 miles away is a picturesque seaport famous for its Captain Cook connections, where the cobbled streets and yards stand in the shadow of the Abbey, overlooking the harbour.
