This delightful cottage is situated in the tiny and remote hamlet of Helwith in the North Yorkshire Dales on the historic Barningham and Holgate Estate. Helwith Cottage is a standalone property with far reaching views of the Dales. It is surrounded by grouse moorland, grazing sheep and a vast array of wildlife. Helwith Manor Farm sits 100 yards below Helwith Cottage. The cottage was once the vicar’s house for the now demolished church, which comprised a thriving congregation when the hamlet was inhabited in the 18th and 19th centuries due to the lead and tin mining activities in the area.
Helwith Cottage is decorated in keeping with its traditional surroundings with a mixture of antique and contemporary furniture using fabrics from Colefax & Fowler, and Linwood, giving it a warm and natural ambience.
The cottage is surrounded by stunning views over to Braithwaite’s Gill, Hurst and Arkengarthdale Moors, Telfit Moor, Barningham and Holgate moors. Helwith Beck, running through the valley below, is crossed via a small bridge which featured in the opening credits of the famous ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ TV series. The nearby Manor House Farm with a tea garden, offers cream teas to walkers and cyclists enjoying the wonderful walks in the area.
Marske, 5 miles away, is the nearest village, and a further 5 miles from Richmond. It is located on Marske Beck, just before the river’s confluence with the River Swale. Close by, Barningham is a picturesque village between Richmond and Barnard Castle. Named ’Best Small Village’ in 2010 by Durham Rural Community Council, Barningham has a wonderful village pub, a village green, village shop and village hall and is situated on the edge of the moors stretching westwards towards Cumbria, making this a good base for walking the local dales and hills.
There is a wide range of activities to pursue in the area including walking, cycling, fell running, birdwatching, wildlife spotting, fishing, shooting and stalking. History lovers can also enjoy the rich Bronze Age heritage that can be found at remote sites on Barningham Moor, including Chieftan Burial Mounds and the Cup and Ring Stones. Visit historic market towns including Barnard Castle, 6 miles, offering many shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as a large supermarket. Other attractions in Barnard Castle include the Bowes Museum, Witham Arts and Cultural Centre, Rokeby Hall and The Chocolate Fair. Richmond, 10 miles, is also worth a visit where you will find Richmond Castle, and a large cobbled market square surrounded by shops, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. Other attractions include Auckland Castle, Raby Castle, High Force Waterfall, The Forbidden Corner at Leyburn, Duncombe Park, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Gardens, which can all be reached in under an hour.
Pre-made dishes are available by request from the pub in Barningham Village which can be arranged via the housekeeper for your arrival or throughout your stay. Groceries for the fridge can also be pre-ordered.
If you prefer to dine out, there’s a local village pub in Barningham just a short drive away, which serves food daily, along with a selection of real ales, beers, wines, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. From here you can enjoy a riverside walk to Easby Abbey which lies in picturesque surroundings by the River Swale. Easby is one of the best preserved monasteries of the Premonstratensian ’White Canons’, with the magnificent refectory, gatehouse and canons’ dormitory remaining. The parish church within the precinct, which is still in use, contains rare 13th century wall paintings.

Travel just 7 miles to the west and you will arrive in the popular market town of Leyburn where a buzzing market lines the streets every Friday with stallholders selling a wide array of produce and wares. Leyburn is well served by a good range of traditional shops and amenities. The green rolling hills of Wensleydale lie to the west of Leyburn with many historic, inspiring landmarks. Just 2 miles from Leyburn is Middleham, famous for its castle that was home to Richard III, and has a wonderful racehorse presence. As well as the Dales, you are just a half hour drive away from the North York Moors National Park with attractions such as Sutton Bank, where you can take in the breathtaking views back across the national park or spend your day strolling around the market towns of Thirsk, Bedale and Northallerton. The Lake District can be reached in just over an hour. Beach 27 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

Corner House is situated opposite a very popular pub and beautiful St Andrews Church (known as ’the cathedral of the Dale’) in the pretty village of Grinton, Swaledale. This charming, double fronted, semi-detached stone cottage, with traditional features such as beamed ceilings and period fireplaces, offers home from home comforts of modern day living. It has an entrance porch with space for coats, walking boots, walking sticks and umbrellas, as well as room to dry the dog!

To the front of the house is a pretty enclosed garden, which is a perfect place to sit out with your morning coffee or rest at the end of the day and watch the sun go down. A stream behind the house runs down to the River Swale, about 200 yards away, giving opportunities for riverside walks along part of the Coast to Coast path. The cottage offers wonderful views with the countryside of Swaledale right on your doorstep with walks to suit ramblers and strollers alike. Within easy walking distance is Reeth, which is set around a village green surrounded by cafés, pubs, restaurants, craft and gift shops.

Swaledale is an increasingly popular destination for cyclists, following from the Tour de France Grand Depart and the annual Tour de Yorkshire. 2019 sees the cyclists taking part in the World Championships passing through Grinton, the route taking them past Corner House. A short walk along the road takes you to the Dales Bike Centre offering cycle hire, and a must stop is the on-site coffee shop serving excellent cakes and hot drinks.

For food and drink you will be spoilt for choice. The local pub is a 15th-century former coaching house which overlooks the River Swale and is a popular stopping off point for walkers and cyclists. It is a 50 yards stroll from the cottage and serves good food and local ales. The village of Reeth is a short distance either by foot or car, and has a variety of pubs also serving good food.

The charming town of Richmond with its Norman castle, cobbled market place and Georgian Theatre is within easy reach, as are Easby Abbey, Aysgarth Falls, Bowes Museum, Semerwater and Hardraw Force. Each year the beautiful Yorkshire Dales form the backdrop for a fantastic range of festivals, galas, agricultural shows and large scale events. Whether it’s music, arts, books, walking or even scarecrows, there will be a festival for you. Arkengarthdale is a great destination, being just 4 miles from Reeth and within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Approached along a short farm track and surrounded by the most fabulous scenery, this is a perfect accommodation for couples wanting to enjoy that special, romantic break, with the 18th century inn just a short stroll away serving good local ales, wines and excellent food. Alternatively, visit the highest pub in England - the Tan Hill Inn, just 8 miles further along the road.
Swaledale is increasingly popular with cyclists following the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in 2014 and the annual Tour De Yorkshire. Just a few miles down the road is a bike centre providing cycle hire for those who need it. The Swale Trail runs from Reeth to Keld and is ideal for families. This area is a walker’s paradise as the varied landscape provides miles of walks, both low-level, gentle strolls along the river and more challenging high-level walks. With high mountains and valleys lined with streams, there are endless footpaths around the most spectacular scenery.
Nearby Reeth, approximately 4 miles away has two village stores, craft shops, pubs and tea rooms. Historic Richmond with its Georgian theatre, Norman Castle and beautiful riverside walks is just a short drive away. Here you will find a bustling market town, with cobbled alleyways lined with galleries, eclectic shops and tea rooms. In the opposite direction is Barnard Castle, with its market, antique shops and famous Bowes Museum. Take a drive into Wensleydale and visit the market towns of Hawes and Leyburn, with a host of attractions located in the surrounding area.
